38,178 ETH Lost by Israel-Based Cryptocurrency Firm

$75 million in ETH has been allegedly lost by an Isreali cryptocurrency owing to deletion of the private phrases to the digital wallet where about 38,178 ETH was stored. A lawsuit has been filed against Fireblock, an Israel-based firm in whose custody the ETH was kept. StakeHound claims the former was negligent about the private phrases. However, Fireblock has absolved itself of the claim by the other party saying it was they who didn’t back up the private phrases.

This lawsuit was reported by Alan Gal, cybersecurity expert and is said to have taken place. StakeHound filed the lawsuit against Fireblock at the Tel Aviv District Court in Israel. Lawyers from StakeHound’s end alleged that personnels of the Fireblock were careless over the key phrases and as such were responsible for the $75 million loss. The firm had further claimed that Fireblock failed to store or back up the key phrases holding the 38,178 ETH. A partner of StakeHound had tried to confirm the key phrases from the former’s wallet when it was discovered that Fireblock was reportedly unable to produce the phrases.

Private phrases Explained

Private phrases are normally found on either hardware or software wallets where cryptocurrencies are normally stored. The key phrases normally consist of either 12 or 24 English words which users are required to back up or store while creating a new wallet. In any event where the wallet is destroyed or the device on which the wallet was created gets stolen or danaged.

Where the owner of the wallet wants to access the previous wallet on the former device or hardware wallet, he will be required to input the 12 or 24 key phrases in the corresponding order to import the wallet on a new device. If the owner fails to store the key phrases when opening the account or forgets them, the implication is that he will be unable to access the wallet and whatever fund was in there will likewise be unrecoverable. Usernames and passwords are not required to open crypto wallets in order to preserve users’ anonymity and attacks their data. So private phrases serve as the username and passwords.

Fireblock Absolves Itself of Any Responsibility

Fireblock has denied any form of culpability in the alleged incident. The crypto firm’s CEO, Michael Shaulov waves off claims that Fireblock was responsible for the loss of the large amount of ETH. He further explained what the ETH was meant for. According to him, the fund was meant for a staking project on the proposed Ethereum 2.0. Ethereum 2.0 would be built on a proof of stake consensus algorithm away from the Proof-of-Work protocol which it is currently built on. Shaulov claimed that the phrases to the said wallet were generated outside the Fireblock platform. However, he assured that the phrases and funds of its clients are backed up and safe.
