Tech Guru, John McAfee, Commits Suicide in Prison

The creator of the McAfee anti-virus software, John McAfee has been found dead in a spanish cell where he has been incarcerated for nine months following his arrest at the Barcelona airport in October. The tech guru was arrested while trying to board a flight to Istanbul. According to a report issued by the Catalan authorities, software developer and programmer was said to have committed suicide in light of his proposed extradition to the US.

John McAfee had been indicted by the US government for tax evasion which prompted him to flee the country. The US government alleged that McAfee has evaded tax for 4 years. The US Securities and Exchange Commission tried the programmer for promoting cryptocurrencies. He is said to have prompted popular meme-based token Dogecoin and Verge (XVG). 

While the cause of his death is still uncertain and under investigation, reports indicate that the tech guru hung himself in prison in protest of the injustice he felt was being meted out against him by the US government. He had alleged that the US government wanted to make an example out of him. McAfee was 75 years old at the time of his death. Catalan authorities issued a stament attributing his death to suicide. However, fans of McAfee believe this is untrue and that he was killed.

John McAfee Created McAfee Anti-Virus 

John McAfee was the brain behind the McAfee software, the pioneer of commercial anti-virus programs before he sold the franchise to Intel (INTC). Efforts at changing the name of the franchise by Intel were largely unsuccessful; so they stuck with the name. McAfee had made fun of the attempts by Intel with a perverse video posted on YouTube in 2019.

McAfee’s sparked reactions around the world, especially on Crypto Twitter with many lamenting over the unfair nature of the legal and prison system. A Spanish court had decided that McAfee would be extradited to the US although the decision could be appealed. The tech guru was in despair over the court’s decision after spending nine months in jail. According to reports, he would have possibly been slammed in a 23-year sentence if was extradited to the US.

McAfee’s Wife Criticises US Government 

McAfee as a programmer worked with Xerox, NASA and Lockheed corporation before creating the McAfee anti-virus software in 1987. He sold the company to Intel in 1990. After he left McAfee, he set up a few other franchises before getting involved in cryptocurrencies later in his life. McAfee is survived by Janice McAfee, his wife who he met as a prostitute. On June 20, Janice had taken to Twitter to bemoan her husband’s fate. She lamented that the US government was determined to make him die while in incarceration. She also would not be given a fair trial if extradited to the US. John McAfee had contested for US Presidency under the Libertarian Party.
