Developer Takes Ordinals to Litecoin as Bitcoin Inscriptions Go Beyond 152k

Ordinal Inscriptions have taken the Bitcoin blockchain by storm. According to Dune analytics, more than 152,000 inscriptions have been created to date. Yesterday, a coder brought the Ordinals project to Litecoin, another Proof-of-Work blockchain.

Litecoin network was launched in 2011 by former Google employee Charlie Lee, with the aim of processing transactions quicker than Bitcoin. Its native token, LTC, has dropped by 2.6% in the past 24 hours and is currently trading at $96.01, according to CoinGecko. In 2017, Lee sold all his LTC holdings to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

How Litecoin-Based Ordinals Were Born

The journey to bring Ordinals to the Litecoin blockchain started on February 9, when a Twitter user (@IndigoNakamoto) offered $500 or 5 LTC to any developer who could import Ordinals to Litecoin. On Monday, a software developer, Anthony Guerrera, launched the Litecoin version of Ordinals on GitHub.

Guerrera said Litecoin was selected since it is the only other blockchain that could support Ordinals. He added that he was motivated by the reward offered by Indigo and a few others. The software developer says he has received 23 LTC worth around $2,200 as of this writing.

Further, Guerrera reports that when he started working on the project, he discovered problems with its dependency on Bitcoin’s Rust, which didn’t support Litecoin’s MimbleWimble upgrade. Rust is a programming language meant for performance and safety.

The MimbleWimble Upgrade and Its Importance to Ordinals

Guerra said he forked Bitcoin’s Rust to develop one compatible with MimbleWimble. Launched last May, MimbleWimble is an upgrade that aims to boost the Litecoin blockchain’s privacy alongside transaction size.

According to Guerrera, MimbleWimble makes Litecoin blockchain the perfect place to host Ordinals since it’s able to handle more data in a single transaction at a cheaper cost than Bitcoin. In addition, users can transfer money privately before inscribing.

Following his successful mission to create Litecoin-based Ordinals, Guerrera took to Twitter to inform his followers about the achievement. The recipient was positive, but whether the project will receive hype similar to Bitcoin-based Ordinals remains to be seen.
