Hackers Hijack Popular YouTube Channel to Promote Crypto Scam

The world is changing rapidly, and incidents of cyber warfare are becoming more common. One such incident came to light on YouTube, where a channel named DidYouKnowGaming suffered from a hack attack. The hackers in question seem to have some agendas on their minds for the popular gaming channel.

As soon as the invaders took hold of the YT account, they started to promote the XRP token among the subscribers and viewers of the channel.

To deal with the issue, the administrator of the channel has to call upon technical support to regain control of their gaming channel. In the past, there have been some other incidents of the same nature. This type of event also happened in 2020, when Ripple sued YouTube administrators for not taking measures to prevent such hijacks.

As per data projections shared by IT Governance, YouTube dealt with only 78 cases of data breaches and cyber-attacks in December 2022.

Scammers Used YouTube Channel for XRP Scam

The administrators of the affected channel have taken to Twitter to connect with their followers and update them concerning the recovery process.

The team has informed us that it is working with developers to regain control of the channel in question while also applying for assistance from YouTube officials. The tweet revealed that the hackers were able to invade the YT channel using a Google account as a backdoor.

As soon as the DidYouKnowGaming channel was hacked, its name was changed to Ripple. Furthermore, the hackers also used the official logo of Ripple to seem legitimate and give the impression that these ideas were coming from official Ripple officials.

It is worth noting that this gaming channel touts around 2.4 million subscribers. However, the team was alerted about the issue as soon as the content uploaded by hackers started to appear on their feed and personalized timeline.

The original operators of YouTube were able to recover their authentic video content as hackers did not delete them. However, some users of the channel have expressed their protest against such incidents where scammers tend to persuade them using such tactics. There was another incident in 2020, where impersonated Ripple executives to promote XRP giveaways.

In some cases, threat actors have enticed the USDT investment scheme. Some statistics from WithSecure have revealed that around 900 unsuspecting users ended up losing $100K.
