Hackers Demand $2M in BTC After Stealing Confidential Data From Insomniac Games
Cybercriminals Target Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games came under cyberattack on Tuesday. Rhysida, a notorious hacker group, has claimed responsibility and now demands a ransom of 50 Bitcoin worth over $2 million. According to news platform CyberDaily, tech giant Sony has already launched investigations into the breach.
Rhysida is said to have accessed confidential data such as US passport scans, screenshots of Insomniac’s soon-to-be-launched game Wolverine, and personal data from several W9 tax forms. Per the CyberDaily report, the personal data, which includes addresses and social security numbers, belongs to former or current Insomniac Games employees.
The hacker group has given the game developer seven days to fulfill its demands. However, according to various reports, Rhysida has already started auctioning the confidential data, with the starting price set at 50 BTC. The cybercriminal organization claims it will only sell the data to one person, making him/her the exclusive owner.
Cyberattacks Targeting Video Games in Recent Years
The Wolverine game was first revealed in 2021 and has been under development ever since. It is not the first game to have suffered a cyberattack that resulted in the leakage of vital information. Last year, Hackers stole and leaked certain content from the Grand Theft Auto 6 game, which will launch in 2025. The developer behind the game, Rockstar Games, confirmed earlier this year that it had identified a teenage hacker as the mastermind of the cyberattack. The young attacker was convicted in the United Kingdom in August for fraud and blackmail.
Sony, the company behind PlayStation consoles, was also hacked in October by a hacker group identified as RansomedVC, which threatened to sell the stolen data in exchange for Bitcoin. Over 60 million people were impacted by the hack. However, it is unclear how many individuals have been affected by the latest attack on Insomniac Games.
Rhysida Demands Ransom to be Paid in BTC in Another Attack
This isn’t the first time Rhysida has asked its victim to pay ransom in the form of Bitcoin. Last month, the hacker group attacked The British Library and demanded a ransom of 20 BTC to give access to the stolen data.
