Animoca Brands CEO Says “Triple-A Console-Style” Web3 Games Will Hit the Market in 2024

Over the last few years, Web3 gaming developers have primarily launched play-to-earn games. But Animoca Brands boss Robby Yung says that could change in 2024. He expects Web3 companies to launch more triple-A console-style blockchain-based games next year. At the moment, only a few games fit into this category. They include Phantom Galaxies, Devourers, and Life Beyond.

Life Beyond, whose development team is backed by Animoca Brands, is still in the alpha stage, but Yung says it will be ready for full launch at the start of next year. The brains behind the project have produced several top-quality Web2 games. For instance, Life Beyond founder Benjamin Charbit was part of the Ubisoft team that created the popular game Assassin’s Creed. For this reason, Yung believes the new game will likely attract Web2 gamers, who have been against the idea of integrating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into games.

The Animoca Brands CEO compares the current hostility to a situation in 2009 when mobile gaming was introduced. At the time, many gamers felt that gaming on tiny mobile screens did not equate to actual gaming. However, they eventually adjusted to the new model.

Yung now says his company is adopting another model that combines blockchain and traditional gaming in an effort to onboard Web2 gamers.

Animoca Brands’ Metaverse Ambitions

Animoca Brands, the company behind play-to-earn game The Sandbox, is looking to step into the metaverse. Yung says the firm will build a decentralized metaverse, unlike some tech giants pushing for centralized platforms. He adds that a virtual world built without blockchain technology and lacks interoperability does not fit the “metaverse” description.

Yung on the Current Global Regulatory Environment

Animoca Brands CEO is displeased by the regulatory uncertainty in the United States. He says his firm is currently not focusing on the US until authorities provide clear crypto guidelines.

Yung is, however, satisfied with what France has done. He claims that the regulators in the region rarely target crypto players. This has attracted many Web3 developers to set up shop in France. Yung is rooting for the Emmanuel Macron-led country to be a popular Web3 Hub worldwide in the next few years.
