Blockasset, a platform that enables athletes to offer their NFT collections, announced on Tuesday that it has plans to expand beyond Solana to Chiliz Chain, a layer-1 blockchain developed by sports fan token company Chiliz.

To support the expansion, the owner of the Socios reward platform and fan token, Chiliz, granted Blockasset an equity investment.

Socios partners with over 150 sports organizations, including the NHL, MLS, NFL, NBA, and top football leagues across the world.

Athletes Offering NFTs on Blockasset Platform

Meanwhile, Blockasset says it has over 40 athletes offering NFTs through its platform, including NHL legend Alex Ovechkin, UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal, English football star Wayne Rooney and New Zealand rugby player Jonah Lomu, among others.

Blockasset joins a growing list of companies expanding to Chiliz’s blockchain. Some of the firms include the gamification platform LiveLike and live-streaming provider FanFest.

In a blog post, Chiliz stated it was now focusing on helping Blockasset ‘move from Solana to Chiliz Chain’. However, Blockasset co-founder Mike Dickens disputed the statement in a tweet, saying the NFT platform was not leaving Solana. Instead, the company will employ a cross-chain approach.

Projects Leave Solana for Other Blockchains

Many Solana projects have recently announced plans to leave the Solana ecosystem. For example, Solana NFT game Tiny Colony is leaving for the Ethereum layer-2 network Immutable X. This month, two of the most popular Solana NFT collections, Yoots and DeGods, will bridge over to Polygon and Ethereum, respectively.

Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus says Blockasset’s athlete token model is different but completely complements his firm’s Socios fan token approach.

Blockasset NFT holders are entitled to perks such as meet-and-greet events, Discord chats with their favorite athletes, and merchandise. Chiliz also offers the same perks through its reward platform Socios.

Socios recently secured deals with the Professional Fighters League and UFC. The reward platform also owns an equity stake in the digital studio of the Spanish football club Barcelona. In addition, famous football star Lionel Messi is Socios’ global brand ambassador.
