There has been an increase in Bitcoin ATM scams in Canada, leaving the populace in dismay and fear. Canadians have described the disturbing ATM scams as rampant in the country, which leaves the citizenry confused, thereby making transactions difficult from the fear of fund theft.
Fraudulent ATMs masqueraded as government owned
The fraudulent ATMs are disguised as trusted Canadian government agency ATMs, making the unsuspecting citizen immediately trust and transfer with the machine. Following the rise of the scams, Canadian authorities have taken up the duty to inform and warn its citizens from such ATMs to prevent them from falling into the machine’s hands.
With the hope to prevent further scams, Ravi Patel, a local store owner in North Delta, alongside his partner, got to know of this scam and informed many people of the fraudulent occurrence, thereby preventing the loss of thousands of dollars to scammers through the ATM.
The store owner got to know of the scam gimmick through Canadian authorities informing the citizens of the Bitcoin ATM scams, especially to those who are new to the nation’s laws. Ravi was not afraid of doing his bit for the country as he included warning signs concerning the scam and informed people by creating awareness in his store. The signs were boldly put in the store to help the nation prevent furthers loss, especially in that region. The signs were written for English and Hindu speakers to help further informing non-English speaking residents.

He revealed that his signs had helped up to eight people from transferring with the Bitcoin ATM, preventing losing their money. The store owner and his wife also prevented an unsuspecting man from making a large transfer of $5,500 through the ATM. It’s worrisome to know that some people are not informed about the new scamming technique despite the local policemen’s constant warning.
They further prevented another girl from making a transfer that would have landed in the scammers’ accounts. They informed the public that the young girl had made an earlier transfer of $3,000 from her $7,000. Ravi swung into action by stopping her from making further transfers through the scam ATM.
People who fall into the scam fall under the guise that the government owns the ATM. The police informed that the scammers used that to lure people into using the Bitcoin ATMs. The scammer will tell the people that they had defaulted in certain things and ask them to use the machine to transfer the funds to make amends on it. The authorities explained to the citizenry that the Canadian government would never ask citizens to pay for defaulted taxes through Bitcoin ATMs and not be deceived.
Cris Leykauf, an authority in the local police, explained that the government would never request a Bitcoin tax payment. The Bitcoin payment is not part of the Canadian laws and would not be expected, some claims clarified. The public affairs manager warned people from sending Bitcoin as a tax payment because if Bitcoin was requested, it’s likely to be a scam.
