The researchers at ESET found that hackers steal the bitcoins from dark web users. They have used the fake version of the Tor browser for stealing as this fake version malware picks the sensitive information of the users.
BTC of worth $40,000 have been Stolen
The hackers are always striving to fish out the crypto and grab the opportunity when found the shortcoming on any site. There are many exchanges that became the victims of Bitcoin stealing and affected by the great loss.
The advantages and disadvantages work side by side. The blockchain came to minimize the role of the third party but this also brings an opportunity for hackers to make their path easy. Due to no role of the third party, the crypto is using to a very large extent in the dark web activities.
The total worth of hacked bitcoins is estimated to be $40,000. According to the ESET team this is not the exact value as more bitcoins are stolen. The report published by the ESET team revealed:
This trojanized Tor Browser is a non-typical form of malware, designed to steal digital currency from visitors to darknet markets. Criminals didn’t modify binary components of the Tor Browser; instead, they introduced changes to settings and the HTTPS Everywhere extension. This has allowed them to steal digital money, unnoticed, for years.
How the BTC hacked
It was reported on Oct.3 that researchers have found the new malware that is being used by hackers to hack BTC. The victims of this stolen act are from Russia speaking users. It is noticed that two websites are showing the visitors that they have an older version of Tor browser and given a link to update it. But when they opened the link it is redirected to another page where the fake browser was present.
When the dark web users used the fake web browser to send or receive the bitcoins, the keyboard and mouse actions controlled by malware take the screenshots of the sensitive information. In this way, these hackers have stolen the Bitcoins.
