El Salvador Fixes Digital Wallet after Bumpy BTC Debut
Developers took down the Chivo BTC wallet for around 5 hours for maintenance purposes after several users reported issues associated with the Bitcoin app.
Nayib Bukele’s move to legalize Bitcoin in El Salvador encountered its first challenge after users reported downtimes when installing and operating the Chivo wallet. That forced developers to take down the crypto app after the official launch. However, the Salvadorian president declared that they already resolved the issues with the digital wallet. Bukele tweeted that they had completed the day’s Chivo wallet maintenance. He also urged the citizen to comment on any problem related to using it.
Several app stores, including Apple Store, Huawei AppGallerry, and Google Play, launched the Chivo digital wallet after the Bitcoin law. Meanwhile, it did not take long before the new app faced issues.
After multiple reports by users concerning download and system downtime issues, the president declared a maintenance period targeted to fix the reported faults and upgrade user experience. He posted that their team was ready to carry out the maintenance to better the services. Bukele also announced disconnecting the systems.
Only Samsung Galaxy S21 and Samsung Galaxy S20 will support the Chivo wallet available in Google Play at the moment. Though the services resumed, the authorities requested users to report any technical issues related to operating Chivo. That is among the steps by the government to improve user experience.
After legalizing Bitcoin, Javier Argueta, the president’s legal counsel, declared a mandate for Salvadorian businesses to accept Bitcoin payments. Meanwhile, Businesses have the right to select between the US dollar and BTC for the final payout. For that reason, the Chivo digital wallet has a feature that allows merchants to convert their BTC income into US dollars. They can do that automatically without delays.
As El Salvador makes a historic move, not every citizen appears happy with the Bitcoin law. That was seen in the streets as the citizens protested against the matter. Most of them cited the issues related to criminal activities and the high coin’s volatility.
