Everything You Need to Know About Web3 Smartphone Solana Saga

Blockchain company Solana rolled out its one-of-a-kind Web3 mobile phone in April. Along with offering users a Web3 experience, the gadget features all the functionalities many expect from smartphones. Dubbed Solana Saga, the mobile phone comes with a DApp (Decentralized Application) store and allows users to integrate crypto wallets easily.

Before launching on April 14, Saga was on pre-order for months. People who pre-ordered the phone were airdropped Saga Pass NFTs. The floor price of this collection is 0.334 SOL as of June 29, according to data from Solana-based NFT marketplace Magic Eden.

After Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko officially launched Saga, it took two weeks for European customers to receive their mobile phones. Those in the United States were supplied theirs early last month.

Solana Saga Features

Manufactured by US-based technology company OSOM, Saga is supported by the Android operating system. It has a 6.6-inch screen with a 1080p resolution. The mobile phone uses a Qualcomm snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Unlike most smartphones, Saga has a big storage of 512 GB with 12 GB of RAM. Also, its battery lasts longer than an iPhone 14 Pro.

The fingerprint sensor is located at the back, and the phone’s camera captures good pictures, although it does not come near Samsung or iPhone cameras. Moreover, Solana could improve the sound quality produced by Saga’s in-built speaker.

How to Set Up Saga

Getting started with Saga involves setting up a Solana wallet along with a seed vault for storing the seed phrase. Users can access their crypto wallets and approve transactions using the fingerprint sensor.

Saga operates similarly to a typical Android phone, so the setup does not differ.

The Saga DApp Store

The DApp store in Saga lets users explore multiple Solana-based projects, including NFTs, games, and decentralized finance protocols. When the smartphone launched, it only had ten apps. However, that figure shot to 25 in May. Although a section of users complained about having trouble downloading some apps in April, these issues were fixed last month following a number of updates.

Saga Experiences

Saga offers users a tour of the Solana ecosystem by giving them access to DApps built on this blockchain. Before you start using the DApp store, you will receive a non-transferable token called Saga Genesis. This token help Solana identify and reward loyal users.

Further, crypto transactions on Saga are seamless since the smartphone simplifies the long approval processes adopted by most crypto wallets. Users only require fingerprints to sign transactions.

Another app that makes the user experience unforgettable is Dialect. The Web3 messaging platform allows users to add NFT stickers to their messages.

There is also the Mintify App, which makes it possible for users to mint their photos at 0.02 SOL per mint. Note that you need to connect your Phantom wallet to start minting. Your photos get uploaded on the Solana blockchain almost instantly, and you are provided with their addresses.

Besides these apps, Solana has enhanced the Saga user experience by conducting airdrops. The company recently announced partnering with Claynosaurz, an NFT community on Solana, to airdrop digital art pieces to everyone who pre-ordered Saga.

Can Saga Be Improved?

There are certain aspects of Saga that could be improved. For example, Solana can consider lowering the price of its smartphone to ensure it’s accessed even by a regular Web3 enthusiast. As of June 29, Saga costs about $1,000.

Also, even though the fingerprint sensor is proving its importance, including facial recognition could improve user experience.

Saga could be better if it starts supporting e-Sims, which are helpful for users who like traveling regularly and may want to use more than two mobile numbers on a single phone.

Finally, Solana should consider adding more Web games on the DApp store, considering NFT-powered gaming is a sector that is being banked on to help onboard over 1 billion people to Web3. The DApp store only has five games as of this writing.
