The current demand for ransoms is no joke as mainly Mexican industries fall victims of the insistent Doppelpaymer criminals. Doppelpaymer is gradually approaching America with its hacking tactics to make companies pay heavily in cryptocurrency. The group coerces industries to pay ransoms to prevent employee and customer details from being leaked to the public.
Breach of privacy is a pawn the hackers use to accomplish their agenda, with so many firms working hard to store company data safely. The new development has made the Federal Bureau of Investigation issue warning to industries.
Doppelpaymer operators demand ransoms through phone calls
The gang was also accused of disrupting the police dispatch system by the Federal Bureau. The agency noted that there had been numerous criminal activities linked to the group, which has led to a notably amount of complaints by the public. Doppelpaymer operators also call their victims to ensure they pay their ransoms which are usually very large, according to the agency.
Since the beginning of the year, the gang has been extorting people by threatening to release personal data to the public through their hacking. FBI also shared that the calls were usually spoofed, meaning it shows a different location from where the person is. A spoofed phone call, showing North Korea, threatened to release data of a business if payments were not made, as shared by the Bureau.
The calls usually involve a threat to release the data or sell it to a private buyer and usually escalate to something more unpleasant. The calls involve emotional harassment, intimidation and series of insults. If the victim refuses to pay at a particular point, they start to release some of the data and pressurize the business or person with more calls to hasten the payment of the ransom. The hackers use the stolen data to request payments in crypto, usually Bitcoin. Some of these problems are what countries are trying to reduce with the individual proposal of inevitable regulation on the blockchain technology.
How group disrupted police dispatch system
The United State is not the only country whose police system was disrupted by the notorious group which primarily targets health and educational institutions. Several other countries have reportedly complained of similar issues.
To make things much worth, a county in the US announced that there was some disruption in its 911 center which stopped bodies from accessing the call system. FBI also noted that the gang also infiltrated the system of a German Hospital, which led to a patient’s transfer. The authorities did not hold the group responsible for his death, because according to them, he was very sick.
The requests Doppelpaymer make to their victims have increased over the year. They are moving from the average $200,000. The gang now targets big organizations to demand as high as millions of dollars in crypto to prevent the release of the data.
Several companies are incorporating more expensive security system to curb the infiltration of hackers and assure optimum security of data. Users are also advised to be careful in cryptocurrency websites because hackers usually get access to the system through links.
