However, users who connect their crypto wallet to the new website would have their crypto assets taken by hackers since they had easy access to their wallets.
Also, the Gate.io Twitter account is under the control of hackers. According to recent information, the Twitter account was used to promote the compromised URL where the hackers will scam victims. Additionally, the Twitter bio was now carrying Gate.com instead of Gate.io.
PeckShield Sends Warnings
Although hacked, Gate.io is still one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. According to data released by CoinMarketCap, the centralized crypto exchange had a trading volume of more than $600 million in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Gate.io has taken back control of the hacked URL and its Twitter account. The website compromised by cyber hackers has been fixed while the giveaway post is no longer showing. But no report has revealed if any Gate.io user fell victim to the phishing scam move.
The constant occurrence of this type of hacking or scam has caused a lot of security agencies to warn crypto investors or traders to always check any URL before clicking it.
Crypto Scams Through Social Media
Phishing scams are now becoming popular in the crypto industry. Additionally, hackers have mastered using the social media accounts of their victims to promote scams.
Many social media accounts have been used for phishing attacks by cyber hackers. The official social media crypto accounts of companies or projects like Yuga Labs, Bored Apes, and many exchanges have been hacked.
Hackers also used these hacked social media accounts to promote crypto-related scams. Besides the risks of social media accounts getting hacked, the constant occurrence of verified phishing bots has caused a lot of famous crypto figures to question twitter’s security policies.
Examples of such famous figures include Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Recently, Binance CEO Chanpeng Zhao revealed that cyber scammers now purchase crypto accounts he follows to scam users.
Also, US lawmakers have questioned Meta-owned social media platforms on how they are waging war against cryptocurrency scams. The lawmakers’ queries follow a recent increase in scams through Bitcoin ATMs across the United States.
According to the FBI, these scammers are using any possible means to steal crypto from their victims.
