Indian Prime Minister is the latest victim of a Twitter hack in which scammers try to snatch money via cryptocurrency. The Twitter account of the website Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) hacked and hackers asked followers to send cryptocurrency funds to hackers.

Hacking Group “John Wick”

The responsibility for hacking one of the Twitter accounts of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is accepted by a hacker group known as “John Wick.” On Twitter account narendramodi_in, the hackers posted the thread:

“I appeal to you all to donate generously to PM National Relief Fund for Covid-19, Now India begin with cryptocurrency, Kindly Donate eth to 0xae073DB1e5752faFF169B1ede7E8E94bF7f80Be6.”

In the end, the hackers also introduced themselves as John Wick by saying,” This account is hacked by John Wick (hckindia@tutanota.com), We have not hacked Paytm Mall.”

Twitter was also aware of the hacking activity and took the necessary steps to restore the account. A Twitter spokesperson said to Reuters:

“We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted.”

The victimized account of PM Modi has more than 2.5 followers, but still, it is not confirmed whether funds transferred to attackers’ accounts or not.

Cybersecurity firm Cyble unveiled on August 30 that the John Wick group was involved in data breaching of Paytm Mall, and it has also demanded ransom at that time. However, Paytm later denied that hackers had breached data.

In July, the world’s largest Twitter hack happened in which accounts of prominent personalities were hacked. Accounts of Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos were included in the hacking list. The scammers asked followers of the high-profile accounts to send funds in cryptocurrency. Not only personal accounts, but corporate accounts were also affected such as Apple and Uber.

In August, investigation of the case revealed that a 17-years old boy from Florida played the central role in the hacking of celebrities’ accounts.
