Russian Industrial Tycoon Blasts Bank of Russia Cryptocurrency Stance
As previously reported here on Tokenhell, Fedot Tumusov, a long-term Russian lawmaker, blasted the country’s central bank authorities over its tough cryptocurrency stance.
Today, Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch, is also toeing the line of Fedot Tumusov. He urged Russia’s central bank from pressuring the crypto industry but grant it an enabling environment to thrive.
One of Russia’s Wealthiest Men Criticizes Bank of Russia’s Cryptocurrency Stance
Here’s what Deripaska wrote on his official Telegram channel yesterday “even poor El Salvador that no one knows except for his more popular neighbor, Honduras, understands the importance of virtual currencies and has adopted it legally as a payment method. However, our dear central bank has only been enacting laws to phase out cryptocurrency in our country.”
Deripaska further criticized the central bank for its nonchalant attitude towards developing the digital currency market based on the bank’s response to questions regarding creating a digital ruble. He opined that the central bank should be at the forefront of “enabling foreign trade settlements by providing real financial instruments.”
Deripaska owns one of Russia’s largest industrial firms, the Basic Element. He is also the founder of Russia’s largest charitable foundation, Volnoe Delo.
However, the very wealthy man and his firms have been battling various allegations from the office of foreign asset control, department of treasury, United States, since 2018. Some of such allegations include extortion, bribery, and money laundering. A recent Reuters report stated that he failed in his latest pursuit to overturn these allegations against him or his companies.
Deripaska’s open criticism of the bank of Russia’s tough stance on cryptocurrency should gear up other wealthy and influential persons in the country to do the same as he and Tumusov have done.
Russia Continues Crackdown On Crypto Websites
Meanwhile, Russian authorities are yet to desist from taking down crypto-related outlets. The latest is a Kungur City court injunction that allows the Berezovsky district prosecutor’s office to take down any crypto-related website.
Hence, it is now illegal for any website in the Krai region to publish crypto-related content and teach people how to earn using bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. It is not clear as to the number of websites that will be affected. Still, authorities of the Krai Region filed the injunction following a YouTube video that allegedly taught people how to convert bitcoin to Russian rubles.
G7 Nations Tasks Russia to End Crypto-Related Cybercrimes
In a meeting held very recently, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. have tasked the Russian authorities to identify and punish those who use digital currency for criminal purposes.
The statement came after the outcome of an FBI investigation on recent ransomware attacks on U.S. companies revealed that the hackers were part of a Russian cybercrime syndicate who demanded to be paid in cryptocurrency. The G7 leaders also discussed the launch of central bank digital currencies and have agreed to collaborate on guiding principles with updates to be provided before the year ends.
