Samsung Partners With Qualcomm And Google to Launch Metaverse Hardware
Samsung, a South Korean-based electronics giant, has announced that it is pursuing the development of its metaverse and extended reality devices, suggesting the possibility of launching a virtual reality headset in the near term.
Accordingly, Samsung’s head of mobile experiences, TM Roh, noted that Samsung would collaborate with Qualcomm, a chip maker, and Google, the famous tech firm, to build the extended reality device.
Samsung To Launch Extended Reality Devices
In recent months, the metaverse has become a significant part of the tech world, with businesses, countries, and companies exploring its potential. According to a 2022 industry report, the metaverse would be worth trillions of dollars in the next few years.
As a result, Samsung is gearing up to secure its place in the metaverse world. The company’s upcoming VR headset and “extended reality” hardware will be a significant game changer.
Roh confirmed that the development of such a device is underway but did not specify a time frame for its release. Also, Roh explained why Samsung had postponed its entry into the metaverse hardware market.
He said that the market was not yet mature and that similar devices introduced by competitors had not achieved the desired success. Samsung has now become one of the many manufacturers that have introduced metaverse devices, like HTC and Meta, and others, such as Apple, who have plans to launch similar devices soon.
Ro noted that the new device from Samsung will feature a Qualcomm chip optimized explicitly for virtual reality use. In addition, it will run on a Google-powered operating system.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s determination to enter what is shaping up to be a highly competitive market might reflect its desire to diversify its offerings. The phone manufacturer wants to move beyond traditional smartphones to explore new frontiers.
Smartphone And The Metaverse To Coexist
Nokia, a technology company in the field of telecommunication, has forecasted that in the latter half of this decade, metaverse technology will replace phones. Contrarily, Roh holds the belief that this new generation of devices does not pose a threat to the current capabilities of smartphones.
He declared, “smartphones will keep improving their features to meet consumer demands. They will continue to deliver fresh and novel experiences.”
According to Roh, it is possible to integrate the metaverse concept with smartphones to enhance and enrich the user experience and then build upon it further. Samsung’s involvement in the realm of the metaverse is not a recent development.
Before this latest initiative, the electronics company has invested in various metaverse-related ventures. In December 2022, the company announced it would invest over $35 million to boost metaverse-driven projects for its Latin American users.
Besides, Samsung also has a global metaverse fund to improve crypto-related developments.
