Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has said that Starlinks has been approached by certain governments around the world and asked to block news sources belonging to Russia. He, however, responded via his Twitter page that the company will not block the Russian sources except “at gunpoint.”
Elon Musk Turns Down Censorship Requests
The SpaceX-operated Starlink provides high-speed and low-latency internet broadband across the world, according to information supplied on its website. Many other Twitter users have thus responded to Elon Musk’s tweets with commendations for not submitting to governments’ inordinate requests.
In response to the tweet, one Twitter user said to Musk that Russia’s news items are propaganda materials, to which the tech investor responded, saying every news sources are in part propaganda, some just more than others.
In Russia, on the other hand, the parliament passed a bill in the past week for the prosecution of anybody who spreads false news relating to Russia’s military as well as the war going on in Ukraine. Penalties for fake news offenses range from fines to up to 15 years in jail term. Any anti-war protesters and those encouraging foreign sanctions on the country are also subjected to prosecution under the new bill. Fake news is said to be defined as any piece of information that has not been officially approved by the government.
Furthermore, Roskomnadzor, which is the central media regulator in Russia, has published guidelines for reporting the Russian war in Ukraine and anything concerning the military. The media throughout Russia can publish only information that has been run through and provided by government sources. It is not allowed, for instance, to call Russia’s action in Ukraine a war or an invasion. It must be described as a special military operation.
Ukraine Remains Connected with Starlink’s Help
The Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, called on Musk for help on the 26th of February. Fedorov had written to Elon Musk saying that as SpaceX was attempting to colonize Mars, Russia was trying to occupy Ukraine. And while the company’s rockets had a successful landing on space, Russia’s rockets fell on Ukrainian civilians. He, therefore, asked Musk to provide Starlink stations to Ukraine and to ask “sane Russians” to stand.
Within ten hours, Elon Must responded to him, saying that Starlink services are now operational in Ukraine and that more terminals are underway. The Vice Prime Minister took to Twitter again last Monday to say that the Starlink equipment had arrived. He thanked Elon Musk profusely.
