Hackers Hit Israeli Insurance Company Shirbit and Demanded 50 BTC For Not Leaking Data
Hackers have hit hard an insurance company in Israel and have managed to get their malicious hands on its private data. They are threatening the firm saying that they will leak its sensitive data in the case they are not provided with what they want.
As reported by the local news media outlet The Jerusalem Post, a group of hackers called “The Black Shadow” attacked the Israeli insurance firm Shirbit earlier this week. It was a cyberattack conducted by this group of hackers on Tuesday. They seem to have completely compromised the personal data or information about the company. The compromised data reportedly includes insurance data and information regarding the employees and executives of the firm.
They contacted the company and asked for a payment in Bitcoin in return for the safety of its sensitive data. Initially, hackers demanded an amount of 50 Bitcoin (BTC) worth approximately $946k (at the press time’s price value of the top-ranked cryptocurrency). In a message sent to the company on Wednesday night, hackers said that they want the payment to be sent within the duration of the next 24 hours to their Bitcoin (BTC) wallet address.
They assured that they will not leak the company’s data neither they will sell it to anybody else if the company sends the money on the given deadline. However, they also issued a warning to the company saying that if it does not send money within the duration of the 24 hours, they will increase the ransom amount from 50 BTC to 100 BTC. And if the company fails again to send the money in the next 24 hours as well then the amount will be doubled further from 100 BTC to 200 BTC. After that, the group said that it will sell the compromised data of the company to other interested people. They also said that they will be disclosing some of the data every 24 hours as well if they are not provided with the money.
An official member from the insurance company talked to one of the hackers who might be the leader of the group. The official spoke on the behalf of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Shirbit. Tokenhell has been able to get hands on the chatting that occurred between them.
Seemingly, the group has already disclosed online some parts of the information including internal faxes, personal files, and ID cards, etc. They did this in a bid to pressurize the insurance company to send the money immediately.
Commenting on this hacking incident, the Chief Executive Officer of Shirbit Zvi Leibushor said, “Shirbit has invested millions of shekels in securing databases and protecting against cyberattacks, and meets all the stringent regulatory requirements in this area.”
Adding more to it, he said that this attack has been conducted on the country’s economy. He said that they are doing everything in their hands to find out these attackers and then catch them.
