Democratic Senate and House Lawmakers Oblige Crypto Miners to Disclose Energy Consumption and Emissions Data
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren led other Democratic lawmakers to express their impatience in a letter penned to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DoE) for more disclosures from crypto miners.
Rapid and Mandatory Disclosure of Energy Usage Data
Supported by fellow Senate and House members, Warren considers the disclosure regime a critical requirement necessitating rapid and mandatory implementation. The letter culminates from the lawmakers’ involvement in scrutinizing crypto miners’ energy usage and carbon emissions relative to the US goals.
The letter conveyed to the EPA administrator EPA Michael Regan challenges the agency to implement a mandatory rule for crypto miners to furnish energy consumption data. The letter asks the EPA to collect energy consumption data from crypto miners whose carbon emissions exceed 25000 tons.
Honor Environmental and Social Responsibility
The letter reminds EPA administrators to exercise authority in collecting data from miners whose emissions exceed the threshold. The lawmakers cite two crypto miners in their letter – Stronghold Digital Mining (SDIG) and Greenidge Generation (GREE) for generating emissions ten times the threshold since 2021.
A review of the lawmakers’ allegations shows that GREE and SDIG run fossil fuel-powered generation plants. The ownership implies that the emissions hardly represent the industry’s units. The Democratic lawmakers challenged the agencies to reveal when they schedule to collect and analyze the industry’s information. In particular, the lawmakers challenged agencies to comply with the September 2022 directive the Office for Science and Technology issued to collect data on environmental and social impact.
Democratic Lawmakers Demand Disclosure of Energy Consumption and Carbon Emissions
Besides Senator Warren, the letter garnered support from Illinois senator Richard Durbin, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Jeffrey Merkely of Ore and Edward Markey. The move drew the support of House of Representatives members, including Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, Katie Porter and Jared Huffman from California.
The lawmakers revealed initial plans by EPA and DoE to engage miners through the Digital Chamber of Commerce. The lobby group would facilitate their training on utilizing the Portfolio Manager tool. The Energy Star initiative would enable benchmarking of commercial buildings’ energy consumption data disclosures.
