Polygon Labs President Says Gamers Will Fuel Web3 Adoption

Video games are perceived as the killer app for Web3 by many crypto builders. According to these developers, gamers stand to benefit from owning in-game items as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). For example, they could profit from the value increase of their NFTs and also have the ability to transfer them between games. However, most Web2 gamers are not buying it.

A push for NFT-powered games by prominent gaming firms like GSC Game World, Square Enix, and Ubisoft has faced massive backlash from many video game fans. These gamers claim that the crypto industry is filled with scams and are convinced that game publishers only want to use NFTs to obtain more money from them.

Why Wyatt Thinks Gamers are the Drivers of Web3 Adoption

Polygon Labs President Ryan Wyatt, who transitioned into the crypto world in January 2022 after a successful career in video games and esports, explains why he believes gamers will fuel Web3 adoption. Wyatt says the resistance seen today will be gone in the next few years.

According to the Polygon President, traditional gamers already know digital ownership, plus the idea that digital items can have value because Web2 gaming firms are offering such items but in a limited fashion. For example, Fortnite sells a wide range of virtual items that cannot be resold or transferred to other games.

Wyatt Says Current Web3 Games are not Compelling

On the contrary, NFTs represent unique items that can be freely sold and used in other Web3 games. However, Wyatt says there is a need for stronger Web3 games that give traditional gamers more reasons to play.

Play-to-Earn (P2E) games led by Axie Infinity increased in value in 2021, posting about $4.5 billion worth of NFT trading volume. But these games were criticized for being shallow and scammy. The Polygon boss expects developers to create compelling Web3 experiences going forward.

Wyatt envisions a world in which popular Web2 games like Call of Duty: Warzone features blockchain assets, with gamers being able to buy and sell NFT cosmetics and guns. Further, to avoid the hassle of using crypto wallets, the game publisher can offer tokens instead of in-game currency and provide simple crypto on-ramps.
