Famous Brazilian Footballer Falls Victim to Cryptocurrency Scam

Cryptocurrencies are difficult to understand, much like any other investment instrument such as commodities, forex, and stocks. Therefore, scammers may take advantage of the lack of knowledge that some users have about cryptocurrencies and dupe them out of their investments.

When it comes to ordinary citizens might be at risk of such scams. However, recently three members of the Brazilian football team have reported that they are affected by a crypto scam.

One of these affected players is Gustavo Scarpa. The reports about them losing millions in cryptocurrency scams are now making rounds on social media platforms.

As per these speculations, Scarpa was caught up with a dubious cryptocurrency project called Xland. He was joined by other footballers, Willian Bigode and Mayke.

They exclaim that the project promised them up to a 5% return per month on their massive investments. It is worth noting that offering unrealistic sums of returns is a classic sign of financial scams that is also prevalent in the crypto market.

Scammers are now Targeting the Masses that have Proper Crypto Knowledge

However, he eventually found himself in a dubious situation where he had lost large sums of money to such a scam that might resemble a pyramid scheme. The 29-year-old professional player has made this claim in a WhatsApp recording that was aired by the biggest broadcaster TV Globo.

It is worth noting that he was nominated as the Brazilian League Player for 2022. To deal with this matter, he has filed a formal complaint with the police, joined by his mate Mayke.

He revealed that he was convinced by the scammers to spend as high as 6.3 million reais or $1.2 million in the fraudulent scheme. Both Mayke and Srapa have told the media that their peer Willian Bigode persuaded them to invest in the project.

Explaining the matter, Bigode has told the media that he is not a scammer and he was also affected by the scam in the same manner as his former teammates. He revealed that he had lost around 17.5 million reais in this scam. The lead investigator on the complaint named, Vinicius Salva, has told the media that his agency has collected several shreds of evidence to incriminate the scammers.
