A Hidden Crypto Mine Revealed During a High school inspection
A report coming from the United States says that a secret cryptocurrency mining site has been discovered by the school inspection team. After missing a court hearing, a former municipal employee from Cohasset, Massachusetts, suspected of stealing electricity worth thousands of dollars to power a covert cryptocurrency mine in a school’s crawlspace, is now on the run.
The story has it that the authorities grew suspicious when the suspect failed to appear in court and was nowhere to be found. The Cohasset Middle/High School director conducted a regular check-in in December 2021 and found illegal bitcoin mining activity. The investigation was started after the director discovered electrical lines, makeshift ductwork, and multiple computers that seemed out of place.
Police discovered a sophisticated mining operation concealed behind a false wall in a crawl space. Using top-of-the-line computers and specialized mining technology, the enterprise was set up to mine different cryptocurrencies, such as BTC, ETH, and Litecoin.
The suspect, a former town employee, allegedly used the school’s electricity to power the mining operation, resulting in significant damage to the electrical infrastructure of the building and high electricity bills for the school.

Concerns have been expressed regarding the necessity for more robust security precautions to safeguard public buildings from such operations since the uncovering of the illegal bitcoin mining operation.
Mining for cryptocurrencies uses a lot of resources, which might harm structures and increase electricity costs. The report says that the suspect was arrested and charged with theft and deliberate destruction of property but refused to appear in court, forcing the police to issue a warrant to arrest him.
