Attack on Nvidia: Lapsus$ Demands Might Just Be of Benefit to Crypto Miners

There were reports on Friday of a cyber-attack on Nvidia. The US leading chip maker verified that there was a blackout in its business operation for about 48 hours, and it attempted to calm the panic of worried users that the cyber-attack had absolutely no effect on the services it provides to users.

In a short while after the announcement, LAPSU$, a ransomware hackers’ group, took responsibility for the attack while stating that it has in its custody more than one terabyte of the firm’s data that it had stolen. The group said that it will release the stolen data to the public if its demands to the firm were not met.

The Demands of LAPSU$

The first demand of LAPSU$ is for Nvidia to remove every LHR limitation of its GPU hash rates that obstructs a fast crypto-mining activity. Secondly, the group wants Nvidia to make the code base of its GPU drivers an open-source code, so they can become accessible to everyone who needs them and openly modifiable for all times.

In its originality, the GPU belonging to Nvidia was built for gamers to use, but it happens that the firm has seen an unexpected increased buying of its GPU by cryptocurrency miners, which led to a short supply of its chips in the market since the middle of last year. Nvidia had taken steps to fight the challenges that came with the unintended use of its chips through the placing of a feature to detect mining, which then automatically cuts mining speed by half once any crypto mining use is detected.

The LAPSU$ group is aiming to make up to $1 million from the sale of Nvidia’s mining-blocking feature, and they have further issued a threat to publish some of the firm’s most concealed trade secrets, which include its base source code if the chip manufacturer refuses to cooperate with them. The group gave next week Friday as an ultimatum for their demands to be met via a telegram post.

The statement stated that the group has decided to aid gaming and mining companies. It said further that they want Nvidia to make public an updated version of all 30 series firmware that will get rid of every Light Hash Rate limitation; otherwise, they will leak the HW folder in their care.

LAPSU$ Resume

About 71,000 data documents of Nvidia’s workers and clients have suffered a breach. While it has a massive implication for the company, this will not be LAPSU$ first attempt at sensitive companies. The hackers’ group was credited with bringing down leading Portuguese companies Claro Telecommunication Company and Impressa, and at another time, they carried out an attack on the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
