Bitcoin Donated to WikiLeaks Reached $37 Million, WikiLeaks’s Founder’s Arrest Added $400k Since April 2019

WikiLeaks received donations in 4,043 BTC worth $37 million since 2010. The non-profit organization started accepting payments in Bitcoin when the payment providers stopped transactions of the company. The donation capital of WikiLeaks saw a boom after the arrest of founder Julian Assange as nearly $400,000 accepted via BTC address after the Assange’s arrest.

Julian Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006. Since that time, nearly 10,000 documents have been published on the site. As the content is accepted anonymously, the hidden truths about governments and institutions exposed. This has caused the US government to put forth a case against Assange.

US charged Assange with Serious Crimes

The US government charged WikiLeaks’s founder for his involvement in online crimes and hacking activities. He, as a result, asked for shelter from Ecuadorian government. His request for asylum was granted and he was allowed to live in Ecuadorian’s Embassy in London until 2019.

The former US Intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning was reported to be allegedly involved in delivering private information to WikiLeaks. So, Assange was also affected from the US indictment. In April 2019, he was arrested from Ecuadorian’s Embassy.

In the next two days after the arrest of Assange, bitcoin donations reached worth $32,000. The organization changed the wallet address on Feb.25. The old address accepted donations of almost 4,043 BTC worth $37 million. The new address collected 6.76 BTC so far. However, the clients can also pay in cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), ZCash (ZEC), and Mnero (XMR).

WikiLeaks faced many challenges since the time of creation, but it also attracted mass of people worldwide. Such a big donation amount is the proof of its appreciation across the world.

Financial Blockade forced organization to Accept Bitcoin

The non-profit organization started accepting donation in BTC when the US senators, Mastercard, Visa, PayPal, Moneybookers, and Amex made a financial blockade against it. The financial blockade enforced site to turn to Bitcoin.

It was the earliest organization that acknowledged Bitcoin. Interestingly, its founder was a big opponent of the bitcoin from the start. According to many, Bitcoin got value, in the start, because of WikiLeaks. Crypto enthusiasts have always supported Assange and resisted against his arrest.
