Blockstream Announces “Blockstream Satellite 2.0” – an Upgraded Version of its Bitcoin Satellite Network

The Canadian Blockchain technology company Blockstream that works on the Bitcoin Lightning Network has marked a major update by upgrading its satellite-based Bitcoin network. The new version of the Bitcoin Satellite Network is known as “Blockstream Satellite 2.0. The company announced the launch of Blockstream Satellite 2.0 on Monday, May 4, 2020. According to the announcement, this new version of the Bitcoin satellite network does not need an internet connection to operate.

Blockstream Satellite 2.0 is live now

The blockchain technology company Blockstream launched its free satellite service in 2017 and since that time, it is the first major upgrade to this service. The upgraded version “Bitcoin Satellite 2.0 is now live”. The company says in the announcement that the satellite network has more bandwidth and is more efficient than before. As the company states:

“We are pleased to announce Blockstream Satellite 2.0 is now live, bringing a standards-based transmission protocol, more bandwidth, additional coverage areas, and the ability to sync a Bitcoin full node all the way from the genesis block up to today.”

Before this upgrade, it was not possible for users to sync the Bitcoin node without using an internet connection. But the quality of the version 2.0 is that it does not require users to use an internet connection to synchronize a complete Bitcoin (BTC) node.

Blockstream Satellite 2.0 has more data rate than 1.0 version

As version 2.0 has more bandwidth and more efficiency therefore it helps to increase data capacity from 120 kbps to 1.6 Mbps. Moreover, the user-broadcasted API transmission’s maximum file size also increases from 10 KB to 1 MB with this upgrade.

The company says that version 2.0 has more data rate than version 1.0 which is over 25X. According to the company’s announcement:

“Using the combination of more bandwidth, better spectral efficiency, improved FEC coding efficiency, and lossless Bitcoin transaction compression, Blockstream Satellite 2.0 has over 25x the data rate compared to 1.0.”

Apart from this, the company is also planning on introducing the “Blockstream Satellite Basic Kit” very soon.
