In a shocking announcement, Brazil’s Public Ministry has revealed that it has ample proof of the mastermind of the crypto scam allegedly hiring “professional gunmen” to eliminate his rivals in the crypto space. Glaidson Acacio dos Santos, alias “Bitcoin Pharoah,” was sentenced to jail last year. But he is set to face new trials for masterminding a $7 billion crypto Ponzi scheme.
Bitcoin Pharoah Faces Murder Charges
According to sources familiar with the matter, the suspect allegedly initiated a billion-dollar crypto scam that promised investors a 10% return on their deposits. In addition, the fraudulent investment scheme attracted some of the country’s top celebrities, including models, musicians, actors, and even football players.
Furthermore, the local news outlet Globo is reported to have quoted the Ministry as saying that it has recordings of conversations involving Glaidson. In the recordings, he suggested an elimination system to take out the life of any daring competitor in the country’s Lagos Region crypto space.
Meanwhile, the Public Ministry added that the suspect has a carefully planned structure involving front companies, weapons, spies, and professional assassins. The Ministry also alleged that the suspect had a centralized intelligence component that handled the entire operation.
However, Glaidson’s legal team noted that their client was shocked by the allegation from the government and that it is yet to access the said recordings used by the Ministry. In response, the Ministry disclosed that in the audio files it seized, the suspect mentions pyramid arrangements while also talking about a planned killing spree.
Interestingly, the Ministry revealed that the suspect’s inner circle had established six shell companies to transfer cash to other firms, which pay the organization’s bills.
According to official explanations, the bills include:
- Purchasing weapons.
- Paying shooters and security guards.
- Hiring private spies to monitor victims’ movement before their murder.
In August 2022, Brazilian law enforcement officers arrested a councilman with links to Glaidson. The suspect, Lorram Gomes da Silveira, was detained by officers, and more than $9,250 in cash was confiscated from him.
Authorities claimed that Lorram was co-heading an underground cell network that used cryptocurrency as a tool to embezzle money.
The Crypto Underworld
As the digital asset industry continues to see increased adoption from every part of the world, the crypto space is now becoming a haven for wolves. These criminals are often on the prowl to forcefully breach crypto networks’ security.
Over the years, hackers have orchestrated heists on crypto platforms, stealing billions of dollars worth of crypto assets from users’ wallets. However, with the rise in malware attacks on individual and institutional wallets, cryptocurrency’s dark side is again exposed, undermining the industry’s credibility.
The most worrying aspect of this is the notion that cryptocurrency is rapidly becoming the currency of thieves, a far cry from the principles behind its creation. Despite measures to stop the activities of criminals, attackers are devising new ways to continue, and crypto users remain their exposed targets.
