Can TON Handle Hamster Kombat’s Upcoming Airdrop? Here is What You Should Know

Ten days ago, Telegram game players received exciting news from the developer behind Hamster Kombat. The game studio said its long-awaited token airdrop will happen on September 26th.

However, after the announcement, TON, the blockchain set to facilitate the airdrop, stopped processing transactions for several hours, prompting many to wonder whether the network would be able to handle Hamster Kombat’s airdrop later this month.

The incident brought severe effects on TON’s native token, Toncoin, which plummeted 21% in seven days. Nonetheless, it is still up 203% in the last 12 months.

TON Developer Blames Recent Network Downtime on Increased Demand for DOGS

Following the downtime experienced on TON a few days ago, the developer behind the blockchain put the blame on the rising demand for DOGS. For starters, DOGS is a meme coin launched via an airdrop on August 28th. A few hours after its launch, it became a top 100 cryptocurrency by market capitalization despite TON’s network issues. However, it has dropped to 117 after its market cap plummeted to $542 million.

DOGS and Hamster Kombat are not the only projects running on TON in 2024. This year, the blockchain has attracted significant interest from developers who have launched numerous crypto games and tokens. Among the notable games on TON is Notcoin. According to its developer, the game has played a massive role in boosting traffic to the network, claiming that TON has averaged 1.2 million daily users since its launch.

Will Hamster Kombat’s Airdrop Cause Another Downtime on TON?

As mentioned earlier, many crypto users have doubts about TON’s ability to handle Hamster Kombat’s token airdrop, considering it failed the DOGS test. Moreover, the tap-to-earn game has more users than DOGS. Its developer recently wrote an X post claiming that about 80 million players engage with Hamster Kombat on Telegram every month.

Experts say that if these players receive their HMSTR tokens on September 26th and decide to claim them on the same day, then TON could face service disruptions again.

Meanwhile, a senior developer from the TON Foundation has told news outlet Decrypt that demand for DOGS isn’t the only factor causing issues on the TON blockchain. He says the performance hitches are due to errors in TON’s validator configurations and poor validation hardware used by some validators.

How TON Foundation Plans to Address Network Disruptions

To address these issues, the developer has said that the TON Foundation is working to enhance the transaction validation system to allow validators to carry out their activities seamlessly. Moreover, he says the organization will improve TON’s decentralized penalty system to simplify the process of identifying and penalizing validators who use poor hardware.

According to the developer, these measures will strengthen the network’s stability to enable TON-based projects to run smoothly. Furthermore, the TON Foundation believes that enhancing the infrastructure of its blockchain will allow developers to distribute tokens to users effectively.

The organization is currently working on the TON Mintless Jetton technology, which is expected to reduce pressure on the network during TGE (Token Generation Events) when it goes live in the coming days. In early July, the TON Foundation said the technology will enable developers to airdrop coins to millions of users quickly and cheaply.

Meanwhile, Hamster Kombat’s developer has noted that the design of token airdrops has an impact on TON’s capability to handle transactions. According to the game’s creator, this was the reason they missed the initial July target, as they needed more time to plan how to carry out such a massive token airdrop.

Hamster Kombat Collaborates With TON Foundation Ahead of Its Airdrop

On Friday, the Hamster Kombat team shared an X post, informing gamers that it was working closely with developers from the TON Foundation to ensure the HMSTR airdrop is a success. The team claimed that its airdrop will be the largest in crypto gaming history.

As of this writing, Notcoin is the crypto game that has conducted the biggest token airdrop ever. It airdropped millions of NOT tokens to 35 million players in May. During the airdrop, the TON-based game launched a staking feature to enable players to lock their tokens in exchange for yield to prevent them from dumping their holdings. This move minimized network activity on TON, which explains why there weren’t disruptions at the time.

So, does Hamster Kombat plan to take the same route? Despite the large number of players set to receive free tokens, the team behind the game doesn’t appear to have plans to limit users from cashing out their tokens on the first day. The team believes that together with the TON Foundation developers, they will come up with a technical solution to facilitate smooth transactions on TON on the day of the token airdrop.
