Coffee Giant J.M. Smucker Taps IBM Blockchain For Tracing its 1850 Brand’s Coffee Beans

The coffee giant J.M. Smucker has announced to trace coffee beans of its 1850 brand by using blockchain technology of the IBM blockchain platform. By tracing the Colombian coffee with blockchain tech, the company behind Café Bustelo and Folgers coffee brands will be able to find out the origin or source of the coffee. Also, through this program, consumers of coffee can support those farmers who grow coffee for the company.

Smucker’s partners with IBM

As per the news announced on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, the company J.M. Smucker has partnered with the IBM Blockchain to leverage its blockchain tracking capabilities for tracing the origin of its popular 1850 coffee brand.

The American food giant also known as Smucker’s has partnered with an organization known as Farmer Connect that brings together farmers and customers by connecting them with each other. Farmer Connect will grant access to consumers to its mobile application called “Thank My Farmer”.

Through this app, customers who use 1850 brand coffee can trace the original source of the product with the help of a QR code. They can use a smart device to scan the QR code available on every bag of the coffee which will direct them to the website of Thank My Farmer. On the website, customers can get the entire information regarding the origin of the coffee i.e. where and how it was grown.

The vice president of marketing for coffee at J.M. Smucker’s Tina Meyer-Hawkes said that their main purpose behind all this is to provide transparency to consumers giving them a chance to know the journey of the coffee they drink.  Meyer-Hawkes said:

By providing transparency of our supply chain, we are enabling the consumer to see the journey of their coffee from the region it was produced, to the mill, to exporters and importers.

In order to provide transparency to customers, the food giant is using IBM’s blockchain technology. While on the other hand, to connect coffee consumers and coffee farmers together is the purpose of Smucker’s partnership with the Farmer Connect organization.
