The dark web is a series of websites, inaccessible by regular search engines which allow people to remain undetected through its use of overlay networks . It is a hub for many and allows for illegal transactions in the realm of drugs, weapons along with a host of other unsavoury and usually illegal activities. Thus this new offer by the government is a positive development not just for the cryptocurrency industry but also for the ongoing fight to combat terrorism and cybercrime.

Crypto Payments Would Protect Informant Anonymity

A major benefit of cryptocurrency which along with immutable transactions is undeniably one of its main attractions is the anonymity it provides. Many people involved in its use and trade flock to it because of the degree of anonymity it allows them along with the ability to avoid government involvement in their finances. Both of these benefits are being dangled in order to persuade informants to come forward without the risk of revealing themselves and exposing themselves to unneeded danger.

To this effect, a website called ‘Rewards For Justice’ is currently being pushed by the government to allow willing informants to come forward and report on potential criminal activity. This new provision as reported by CNN is said to be offering informants up to $10 million for any information that could lead to the capture of state-backed hackers. It was advertised recently at a Black Hat hacker conference in Las Vegas through an unsecured Wi-Fi network. This apparently was a targeted effort to advertise this new development to people who would already be largely familiar with the dark web, hacking and cryptocurrency.

The United State’s counter-terrorism program has been in effect since 1984 and has since then awarded over $150 million to over 100 informants through the years. While this might seem like a large sum of money to offer just for information, the information given was actionable and led to the capture of criminals which could have caused the country far more losses in lives and infrastructure.

This crypto offer is yet another indicator that the world’s leading superpower is beginning to recognise the utility of cryptocurrency as a medium of trade. Just recently, the Senate debated on its infrastructure bill which although was met with disgruntlement by many was also lauded as a positive development for the general crypto sphere in the long run as the publicity provided as well as the attention the US is now showing to cryptocurrency means that they recognise it and other countries will most likely soon begin to follow suit.
