Elon Musk Opposes Apple’s Integration of OpenAI ChatGPT Due to Security Concerns

X boss Elon Musk has revealed plans to block Apple use at his companies if the tech company integrates OpenAI ChatGPT on its devices. On Monday, the tech firm unveiled the Apple Intelligence plan at the Worldwide Developers Conference in California. 

The presentation made by Apple chief executive Tim Cook demonstrates that the American tech company seeks to enter into a strategic partnership with OpenAI. Cook explained that collaborating with OpenAI will enable Apple to integrate AI features on its devices.

The CEO outlines that apart from integrating AI features on its OS level, Apple plans to enhance the performance of its virtual assistant Siri through artificial intelligence technology. 

The tech firm anticipates that AI integration on Siri will enable the virtual assistant to leverage the power of OpenAI ChatGPT to execute numerous tasks simultaneously. 

Cook confirmed that the AI integration will allow users to create images and text using ChatGPT. Shortly after Cook’s presentation, Musk hit back at the Apple Inc. proposal to integrate OpenAI ChatGPT on its devices. 

The crypto millionaire opposed Apple Inc.’s move to integrate OpenAI chatbot on the operating system of iPhones, iPads, and Macs, citing the security violation. 

He threatened to ban the use of Apple at his company if the tech firm integrated AI features.  Musk, who owns the best-performing automotive, tech, and communication companies such as Tesla, X Corp, Neuralink, and SpaceX, opposed the Apple move.

Elon Musk Criticizes Integration of AI Features on Apple

He stated that the Apple ban would apply to his company’s visitors and guests. Musk plans to introduce new policies restricting visitors from using Apple devices at his company. 

The proposed rules will force the visitors to leave their Apple gadgets at the entrance, which will be stored in Faraday cages during their visit as Musk-led companies. 

Musk also expressed concern about Apple’s decision to partner with OpenAI to build AI features for its devices. Having gained recognition as a global leader in tech development, Musk questioned why Apple wasn’t able to develop its own AI tools. 

The CEO expressed concern about whether the OpenAI team will be able to protect Apple users’ privacy and security. Revisiting Cook’s presentation, Musk criticized the integration of AI features on Siri.

Apple intends to introduce a new security policy that allows Siri users to authorize the use of AI. The Apple team plans to encrypt user information to prevent the misuse of customers’ confidential data. 

Musk argued that Apple’s integration of OpenAI features would lead to the loss of sensitive information.

SpaceX Boss Criticizes OpenAI Development

Musk’s restrictive move on AI mirrors Apple’s decisive action to ban ChatGPT in the workplace. Also, other government institutions, including the US House of Representatives, restricted the staff from using OpenAI chatbots due to privacy issues. 

Even though Musk has pushed for the adoption of artificial intelligence the executive has priotized the privacy of the user information. Last year Musk launched an AI oriented chatbot Grok, to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Even though Musk has criticized the development of OpenAI,severally, he was among the co-founders of this tech firm in 2015.

In an interview with CNBC, Musk claimed he played a critical role in sustaining the operation of OpenAI. He stated that he led OpenAI in hiring the best scientists and engineers and propelled the tech firm to attract success.

The executive confessed that he recruited Ilya Sutskever, who become OpenAI linchpin. In March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its chief executive for violating the contractual agreement. Musk argued that OpenAI became a profit-chasing firm, abandoning its core objective of developing AI tools that benefit humanity. 

Citing a publication in the Financial Times that demonstrated that OpenAI generated $2 billion annually as of December 2023, Musk complained that the tech firm failed to stick to its mission. During the inception of OpenAI, the company claimed to operate as an open-source and not-for-profit organization.
