Ethereum Officially Launches the Final Medalla Testnet, Mainnet Launch is the Next
The final and public testnet of Ethereum 2.0 called Medalla has been officially launched by ETH developers as confirmed by the official announcement made by the Ethereum Foundation on August 4, 2020. It is the last step before the ETH Foundation officially launches the Ethereum 2.0 mainnet after three months in November which is the next and the ultimate target now.
The Medalla testnet is powered by five clients which are ConsenSys’ Teku, Status’ Nimbus, Sigma Prime’s Lighthouse, ChainSafe Systems’ Lodestar, and Prysmatic Labs’ Prysm.
The Medalla testnet is live now
According to the announcement from the Ethereum Foundation, ETH 2.0’s Medalla testnet is now live. ETH developers say that the Medalla testnet is not meant for handling any value in real neither it can handle real ETH tokens. Therefore, it is unlikely to make any profits out of it. The real use case of the Medalla testnet is that it will serve as a practice to organize validators for Ethereum 2.0’s official mainnet launch.
As a final testnet, Medalla contains several important features of the Ethereum 2.0 mainnet. That is why this testnet is of vital importance to the mainnet.
ETH developers claim that for the activation of the network, node operators had to stake a large amount of ETH tokens a day prior to the release of the Medalla testnet.
The ETH 2.0 mainnet launch is the next
After launching the Medalla testnet successfully, Ethereum developers are now looking forward to initiating the preparations for launching the mainnet launch which is the next target now. Ethereum 2.0’s launch is likely to take place in the month of November this year and it is expected to ensure the efficiency and scalability of the Ethereum network.
Commenting on the Medalla’s launch, one ETH developer named Danny Ryan said that the Medalla’s launch is a major achievement for ETH 2.0. The developer said that if the final testnet gets stable, they will launch the Ethereum 2.0 mainnet:
“The launch of Medalla is a huge milestone in the development of eth2 – if Medalla proves stable, mainnet launch is next – and represents years of hardwork by countless engineers, researchers, and community members. We hope you are as excited as we are :).”
