FDA Approves Neuralink’s Request for Human Trials in Brain-Computer Interface’s

Elon Musk lauded the achievement realised by the Neuralink device created for surgical implantation and will finally be available for the public.

Apparently, the US Foods and Drug Administration approved the CEO’s brain-computer interface (BCI) invention, Neuralink, to carry out ‘in-human’ trials for the surgically implanted brain device.

In-Human Trials for Neuralink Following Approval

At this time, it is still unclear what form of trials it will conduct. However, the only thing stated was that the organisation currently accepts no applicants. In early 2022, the FDA rejected the approval for Neuralink to conduct human trials owing to various concerns regarding safety. At that time, the organisation claimed that it was resolving them.

The reconsideration by the FDA shows that safety concerns have been solved. As such, the organisation can carry out restricted testing of its BCI device.

BCI to Aid Mobility and Medical Challenges

Elon Musk has described BCI’s function by stating that it would aid in specific mobility and medical challenges. Epilepsy is an example of a condition that can be treated using BCIs. In addition, disabled persons benefit from services that enhance their quality of life, for instance, the capability to direct a mouse cursor through thought or the movement of the eyes.

Elon Musk also claims that this device would be created for utilisation by the public in the form of a general-purpose BCI. This would enable them to interact with machines through thought and safeguard them from replacement by machines.

Neuralink Under Investigation for Violating Trial’s Safe Practice

Until now, Neuralink only has permission to use animals, for instance, pigs and monkeys, for tests. Recently, the government investigated the organisation over allegations concerning the mistreatment of animals.

Nevertheless, Neuralink denied participating in the activity, resulting in the investigation’s termination. Another investigation regarding the supposed movement of contaminated devices is ongoing.

By approving human testing, Elon Musk’s idea of AI and humans moves one step ahead. As such, it may be appropriate for entrepreneurs and developers to consider the applications and use cases of a surgically implanted BCI.

It has also been suggested that BCIs would ensure faster operation of smartphones via the human mind instead of the thumbs. A current study by the University of Texas has shown that it is possible to train artificial intelligence systems resembling ChatGPT to interpret brain waves to a restricted level.

Microsoft Patent Laid Down the Basis Leveraged by Neuralink

Microsoft is the most thought-provoking potential use case for blockchain and cryptocurrency communities. In 2018 and 2019, various patents were filed, and they defined a system that involves engineering a wearable sensor to offer proof-of-work for mining blockchain and cryptocurrency rewards.

An example of a patient filing showed that a user’s brain wave or emitted heat that originates from the execution of a task originating from a service or information provider, for instance, utilising specific internet services, could be utilised in the mining process.

By having a brain-computer interface similar to the one described by Neuralink in its original paper and a model similar to the one that Microsoft describes in its patent, there is a possibility of validating brain waves. As such, verifying proof of network through thought alone becomes a possibility.
