FireEye Cybersecurity Firm Stocks Decline By 7.80% After Hack

Hackers are on the move again after a famous cybersecurity outfit, FireEye was the victim in the latest sophisticated attack that was carried out. The hackers were said to have targeted specific U.S government files, documents and systems in the attack. Responding to the attack, the law enforcement of the United States have said that they are now on top of the issue and will release a detailed report in the coming days.

In an official statement that was released on the official blog of FireEye on Tuesday, the firm said that it had been hacked. According to the cybersecurity outfit, the attack was against the United States government because it looks like it was state-sponsored.

FireEye stocks decline by 7.80%

FireEye is notably one of the most consulted cybersecurity outfits across the United States as it has worked with several law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and National Security Agencies and the United States Federal Agency. Responding to the hack attack, the stock of FireEye has considerably gone down 7.80%, with the firms stocks currently trading around the $14.30 region. In a statement that was released by the CEO of the cybersecurity firm, Kevin Mandia, he said that the attack looks like it was sponsored by a nation that could carry out sophisticated hack attacks.

Furthermore, the CEO said that the hacker was very seasoned as he used the loophole he found in the company’s “Red Team” tools. These are the tools that are used to counter various cyber attacks and detect loopholes in systems belonging to FireEye’s client. The CEO said that the hackers went after files and documents that belonged to certain government officials in its care. “The hacker was only interested in files that belonged to our government clients. They are seasoned and were focused during the attack.

Confidential sources point to Russian Intelligence

In another update, the company has alerted the media that it has employed the expertise of Microsoft and the FBI as they would be looking into the issue together. In an email that was obtained from the head of the cyber division of the FBI, Matt Graham, he said the agency is presently looking into the acts of hackers that targeted national files and documents. According to various clandestine sources, the hack might have been carried out by some seasoned hackers in Russian Intelligence.

The source noted that the attack could be carried out by a group of hackers that infiltrated the White House and the state department some years ago. Despite the source pointing to Russian Intelligence, the American government has yet to disclose the people behind the attack.

The United States has witnessed a massive increase in hack across the country. Back in 2015, the Democratic National Committee announced that its servers were hacked by some specific individuals believed to be members of the Russian SVR intelligence service. Furthermore, the Chairman on the select intelligence committee, Adam Schiff has told various intelligence agency in the country to look into the issue, compile and submit a report in the coming weeks.
