The Ethereum mainnet was launched in the year 2015 on July 30 and now half a decade has passed since the Ethereum’s day of launch. Today marks the completion of five years for the mainnet and therefore, the Ethereum foundation is celebrating this day as its fifth anniversary.
The Ethereum network has seen various good and bad times during the course of these five years of development and has evolved as one of the top blockchain networks in the cryptocurrency space. Ethereum also saw its native digital currency ETH growing up to become the world’s second-ranked digital currency by market capitalization in this time frame which marks the major milestone achieved by the network.
The Evolution of the Ethereum network
Ethereum’s founder Vitalik Buterin (Vitaly Dmitriyevich Buterin) laid down the foundation of Ethereum in Dec 2013 via an Ethereum white paper which he published with the title: “Ethereum White Paper: A next-generation smart contract and decentralized application platform”.
Buterin outlined Ethereum’s main objective in this paper and wrote:
“What Ethereum intends to provide is a blockchain with a built-in fully fledged Turing-complete programming language that can be used to create ‘contracts’ that can be used to encode arbitrary state transition functions, allowing users to create any of the systems described above, as well as many others that we have not yet imagined, simply by writing up the logic in a few lines of code.”
After that, Vitalik Buterin introduced Ethereum in Jan 2014 during the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami, Florida. However, the Ethereum mainnet was officially launched in 2015 on July 30.

Ethereum Founder recently appeared in an interview on Tuesday with a cryptocurrency journalist named Laura Shin where he revealed his thoughts regarding Ethereum’s Anniversary. Ethereum founder said:
“Ethereum’s definitely come a long way in the last five years, and it’s definitely been really striking to just see the change… and even just see how more and more of the changes are just outside of mine and even outside of the Ethereum Foundation control.”
