Layer X Set To Partner With xID To Create Blockchain Voting System In Japan

Blockchain technology had witnessed a wide range of adoption across all sectors of the economy, even more than the financial sector it was designed for when Bitcoin was created in 2009. With the coronavirus pandemic necessitating that we use a more distanced approach to tackle issues, especially voting, one Japanese firm has decided to take it upon themselves to make voting via blockchain easy.

According to the Japanese company, Layer X, they would collaborate with an application that supports digital identity known as xID to bring this new invention to life. Furthermore, the firm has said that the blockchain voting system will be built and tested in the Japanese city of Kaga for the main time.

xID will ensure that each voter is verified before casting their votes

In the announcement that Tokyo based Layer X released, the firm said that it was hoping to create and deploy the blockchain voting system to the Japanese city of Kaga. Furthermore, the firm said that it wanted to promote a safe, secure snd credible electronic voting system in the city that boasts of nothing less than 68,000 inhabitants.

The firm also mentioned that one of the core reasons they were planning to develop and deploy the voting technology on time was the costs used to run the present electronic voting system. In the announcement, the company noted that even though the use of the internet in voting possesses some obstacles that need to be addressed, its latest project will ensure that these issues are eliminated, making the voting process safe, secure, and confidential.

Some of the issues mentioned in the announcement were double voting, technical issues that will expose secrecy associated with voting, and the cost of deploying the devices to the region. According to its latest statement, the reason it partnered with xID was to increase the strength of the previous voting system used by the firm. The xID application is the one that will be solely in charge of verification of each voter’s identity and ensure that one person casts one vote.

Layer X wants to encourage tech start-ups in the region

Another thing that was mentioned in the announcement by the firm was that the blockchain voting system would allow participants in the election check their results as well as the cryptographic ability to be able to follow all the process that was taken in the collation of the results such as verification of results, recording processes, aggregation processes of each vote on the blockchain network.

Notably, the officials in the Japanese city of Kaga have infamously named the city a “blockchain city” after the deployment of blockchain technology in the region. Layer X also mentioned that this new project would ensure that the citizens living in rural areas will be no longer leave the regions in droves as they would start encouraging companies in the regions to embrace blockchain technology.
