Hacks in the crypto sector have soiled the industry’s reputation and have also gotten law enforcement on their toes. Even though most of them are always apprehended because of their callousness, the fact remains that the havoc would have been wrecked.
That is what Ledger users face now, as most of them have taken to various social media platforms to air their grievances. News broke around that the private hardware wallet’s customer database was hacked into with details of numerous customers released. Even though Ledger claimed that their assets are safe, most of their customers have called out the wallet company still.
1 million user details were exposed in the July attack
A specific user, JimboChewdip, has taken to the microblogging platform Twitter to show his displeasure and lament the hardships he had to face after his details were one of those leaked. Even though he tried to beat certain malicious actors trying to get into his finances, he could not act before he was locked out.
According to JimboChewdip, after he learned that his details were one of those exposed to the world, he immediately swung into action, changing most of the password that was attached to his numerous accounts. However, he said that while he was doing that, he got a notification that another mobile has been added to his 2 Factor Authentication. It was then that he tried to access his email and found out that he has been hacked.
Furthermore, he started receiving emails of the password changes on numerous accounts tied to the email. After trying to call T Mobile on wifi to no avail, JimboChewdip said that he sent them a message, and they replied promptly and could lock his account. JimboChewdip posted a very long thread about his travails on Twitter for the world to see.
JimboChewdip questions the coincidence of the hack on his account
JimboChewdip also said that when he later tried to access his Coinbase pro account, he realized that someone had already beaten him to it, changing his passwords and carrying out an activity on the account. He said the person sold all his Bitcoin holdings on his Coinbase pro account and withdrew about $2,000 fiat. He also said that even though he is not sure that his leaked details were the cause of the hack, he was very confident that the two events’ coincidence was suspicious.
The recent data dump saw the malicious actors release about 1 million names, emails, and several other sensitive customer information belonging to customers of Ledger. The company initially released a full statement around July where it stated that the details of about 9500 customers had been released into the public web. Still, this new development shows that it is way more than that.
This incident portrays the harms that hacks can do to unsuspecting individuals, especially in the crypto space where it is rampant. The next thing that should be discussed is how to make customer data safe because if one penetrates the database, he could carry out attacks like this in the future.
