New York City Mayor Unveils Plans Prioritizing Responsible AI Utilization in Local Government

The mayor of New York City’s administration has announced a plan for developing a structure for government entities to use artificial intelligence. The plans capture an extensive scope for piloting the initiative within the city’s initial artificial intelligence bot.

Mayor Eric Adams Unveils Ambitious AI Initiative for Local Government

The administration of Eric Adams, New York City’s (NYC’s) mayor, has announced a plan for the local government to embrace and regulate artificial intelligence (AI). This also includes a new incorporation into city application.

On October 16, the administration announced an update claiming it is creating a structure to enable city agencies to ‘rigorously’ assess artificial intelligence tools as their associated dangers. Besides, the framework is meant to aid in improving government workers’ skills and knowledge concerning AI technologies and enhance residents’ quality of life.

The announcement shows that this plan will incorporate 37 ‘critical actions.’ Of these, 29 are set to start or be finalized within 2024.

New York Ushers AI-Powered Advisory Network and Reporting Structure

Examples of the plan’s goals entail having an established artificial intelligence structure, having an artificial intelligence advisory network, publishing a yearly AI progress report, and equipping city officials with knowledge concerning the technology.

The mayor stated that despite AI presenting opportunities to enhance service delivery to citizens, it is also crucial to watch out for the risks.

The statement of an impending AI framework included revising its MyCity Business platform to incorporate the initial model of New York City’s first citywide artificial intelligence chatbot. This feature will aid in answering queries concerning the opening or running a business.

The city’s deputy mayor for housing, economic development, and workforce remarked on the implementation of the chatbot by claiming it is a ‘crucial breakthrough’ to enhance access to government by all persons. Specifically, he said that developing this simple and easy-to-utilize tool removes hindrances to city resources that positively affect small businesses.

New York’s AI-Powered Chatbot Harnessing Data from Thousands of Business Web Pages

The new artificial intelligence chatbot will acquire data from over 2000 business-associated web pages. This will enhance its ability to offer data on adherence to codes and guidelines, available business incentives, and the most suitable practices to avert fines and infringements.
