Italy’s main news agency ANSA has decided to fight against the fake Coronavirus news and is making use of blockchain technology to stop these fake news related to the Coronavirus pandemic and to ensure reliable information.

ANSA develops a blockchain-powered news tracking system

The major news agency has developed a unique news tracking system known as ANSAcheck by utilizing blockchain technology. ANSA collaborated with EY Advisory S.p.A (EY) to develop this news tracking system. ANSAcheck is basically a blockchain-based tool which will strengthen the trust between the organization and its readers and users.

ANSAcheck tracking tool has the ability to trace the history and source of each news item therefore this tracking system will let users verify the history and origin of news released on its platform.

The tracking system will provide readers a news article having a tracking label “Notizia d’origine certificata” (“News of Certified Origin”). Readers just have to click on this tracking label and it will disclose the whole story of the news.

ANSAcheck system is based on EY OpsChain Traceability technology which is ultimately based on the Ethereum blockchain. The platform will use the smart contract technology, an IT object which will let you create a cryptographic string of the news to ‘allow the verification of information’.

Fraudulent use of ANSA brand to spread false news

The Chief Executive Officer of ANSA Stefano de Alessandri says that there has been fraudulent use of this major news agency to spread fake news and information.

“In recent days, we witnessed the frequent fraudulent use of our brand to give truth to false news. “We are therefore particularly proud to be the first to launch a highly innovative project, carried out for all our readers and the clients of the Agency […] Starting today, we can track the origin of the news and – at the same time – support the professionalism of our journalists,” said Stefano.

Fake news related to the Coronavirus epidemic can pose a great threat to people’s lives during this critical situation. Therefore, the news agency has taken this initiative to stop the spread of fake news.
