NFT In Profile Picture: Reddit Makes A Similar Move To Twitter

A top social platform (Reddit) has revealed that its users will soon add NFTs to their profile pictures. Reddit’s announcement comes two days after Twitter made a similar pronouncement.

New NFT Feature Different From Cryptosnoop

However, the social platform quickly clarified that this new feature differs from its cryptosnoop (which was launched in 2021). But Reddit developers are yet to provide the details involved in making this new feature work. As revealed by TechCrunch, the launch of Reddit’s new NFT feature can’t be ascertained yet as the feature is still in the beta test stage.

One of the platform’s top executives, Tim Rathschmidt, stated that “we continue to explore various ways our users and communities can experience total value. One of the new values we are testing for our users is the incorporation of NFTs in profile pictures and verifying their authenticity with the owners. We are still in the research and development phase. Hence, we have not yet decided whether to expand or launch this feature for all users.”

Reddit’s NFT Initiatives

Reddit has been launching various NFT-related projects recently. It even has a separate subdomain that discusses and reveals updates regarding its NFT adventures. As of this writing, this blog’s sole focus is on its NFT marketplace platform (cryptosnoop). Nima Owji is the developer credited for revealing the new NFT feature that Reddit is about to launch.

Owji identified a banner on the Reddit app that referenced the project. Then, he stated that the reference he saw has no relationship with the platform’s NFT marketplace. He also discovered other references in the code that implied that the platform was testing how NFTs work on the OpenSea NFT marketplace. Orji also found these references on Rinkeby (an Ethereum testnet where blockchain-related developments are usually tested.)

Reddit might have been planning this test for a while now. Late last year, the platform sought the services of a senior engineer with experience in NFT-related transactions. As is always the case, not every Reddit user has approved this new feature, with many of them expressing their disapproval through their comments on various sub-Reddits and the main Reddit forum.

NFT Sector Remains Bullish Amidst Downtrend In The Crypto Industry

There remains a lot of market buzz surrounding the NFT sector, even though the broader crypto industry has been declining massively in the last three weeks. The OpenSea NFT marketplace had its highest trading volume two weeks ago per various metrics. Many more famous persons and business moguls are launching their NFTs, collaborating with other NFT platforms, or purchasing selected NFT collectibles.

Recently, Melania Trump (former US first lady), Tom Brady, and Snoop Dogg (famous hip-hop artist) are eminent persons to have forayed into the NFT sector over the past six months. The long-term vision for the NFT sector seems bright, given that almost all the social platforms are joining the NFT bandwagon.

Aside from Twitter and Reddit, YouTube might be the next big platform to launch a similar NFT initiative. The CEO of the largest video search engine revealed the plan to expand YouTube’s current community to include NFTs and other blockchain initiatives in a recent interview.
