Catholic Church Head Gives An Opinion On Bitcoin Mining

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic church has given his opinion on the use of carbon footprint technological development. His opinion follows widespread reactions to Elon Musk’s tweet about the use of fossil fuel in bitcoin mining. While the clergy head never referenced bitcoin directly in his tweet, he condemned the use of fossil fuels in the environment as a cause of heavy pollution. He suggested that researchers and tech firms need to develop new technologies that won’t use fossil fuels as soon as possible. The tweet was part of the Pope’s press release on current issues during the recently concluded Laudato Si’ Week.

In a related development, Salesian Fr. Joshtrom Kureethadam has suggested that all Catholic institutions globally should desist from investing in fossil fuels as a moral and theological duty. It would also be a show of support to the Pope’s groundbreaking encyclical on fossil fuels. According to Fr. Joshtrom, “the climate crisis is causing a lot of suffering to our brethren all over the world and it isn’t right for us to cause them more sufferings.” he further said, “it is a theological imperative as part of our stewardship to god as part of his creation.” fr. Joshtrom made these remarks when delivering a Vatican dicastery webinar on ‘fossil fuel divestment’ which was part of the celebration for the Laudato Si’ Week.
