Ripple to Help Bhutan Develop its CBDC

With several countries exploring the digital currency world, Bhutan, a landlocked country in South Asia, is the latest country to pick up interest in developing its digitized fiat currency. Ripple Labs has reportedly collaborated with the Central Bank of Bhutan to facilitate the country’s CBDC solution. In a statement announced on Wednesday, Ripple confirmed the partnership, claiming that the company has what it takes to develop Bhutan’s CBDC without jeopardizing its financial structure.
According to Ripple, the Royal Monetary Authority would utilize its scaling solutions to manage its digital ngultrum. The monetary body seeks to enhance inter-border payments, encourage an all-inclusive financial system for its citizens, and promote its green project to eliminate carbon.
eCurrency Will Facilitate Payments and Encourage Inclusiveness
Bhutan, a country with about 800,000 people, has a GDP of $2.5B as of 2020. Its citizens are happy with the country’s economy and its plan to seek alternatives to centralized finance. According to the CB, a significant number have no savings account or access to a credit card. Therefore, the RMA looked inwardly and decided to develop its CBDC to facilitate payments more affordably. The monetary body plans to increase financial inclusion by 85% in two years time.
Ripple stated that the CBDC solution would handle a large volume of transactions, including payments successfully. The company added that its CBDC solutions would provide the RMA with more flexibility and control to implement CBDC without hampering the traditional financial system.
The collaboration between Ripple and Bhutan’s Central Bank comes after Ripple said it would help develop a version of the XRP ledger to enable CBs to launch their CBDCs. Bhutan becomes the first country to utilize Ripple’s private ledger for its digital cash solutions.
Other Countries Gear Towards CBDC
Bhutan is one amongst many other countries with an interest in developing its digitized currency. In June, Ghana revealed that it was working to have its digitized currency eCedi and in the process, become the first African country to do so. The Bank of Ghana was reportedly experimenting on it and even said it was in the advanced stages. Governor Ernest Addison said that the digital cash would pass through developmental stages, including pilot studying it in the final phase before certification.
India’s CB has also made a move towards piloting its digital rupee. In late August, the nation’s Reserve Bank said it was carefully studying the benefits of the digital rupee amid the global interests. However, Governor Shaktikanta Dias reiterated that India would start trials before the year ends as it continues its exploration.
China is leading the pack in the CBDC program, having started trails of eYuan since April. Nigeria’s CB has also laid out plans to launch its digitized currency eNaira on National Day.
