Ethereum developers have set the middle of September to implement the long-awaited Merge. The developers made this known at a conference call on the 14th of July. They went into details of the steps needed before the Merge can be concluded and launched.
A New Tentative Date with No Impact
The organizer of the meeting, Tim Beiko, recommended 19th September as the date. Nevertheless, this is not in any way cast in stone, just a roadmap.
Superphiz.eth is one of the project’s developers. They said on Twitter that the date should just be regarded as a working timetable. They added that the community should still expect an official announcement.
The date of September 19th will not be a surprise to observers. Many of them actually expect the Merge to take effect around then. However, some people are skeptical about it and think there will be another delay.
A Twitter user responded sarcastically by saying there was no year attached to the announcement. They said the Merge might occur in 2050. Whereas, the decision by developers to postpone the Ethereum time bomb equally caused doubt.
While the debate over delaying the time bomb was on, certain developers recommended a strong deadline. Beiko, however, pushed against it saying the team already had enough pressure.
Beiko had initially said the Ethereum merge will be effected between August and November. It could only be stopped by a significant enough development. Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder, was also of the same opinion.
For Vitalik Buterin, the merge was going to take place in August if no problem comes up. Coming up in September or later in October is also a possibility.
Ethereum’s Shadow Fork 9
The real date for the Merge is not concluded. Other upgrades on the network are going on as scheduled. The network’s Shadow Fork 9 is up and running.
A DevOps Engineer at the Eth Foundation said developers just tested upgrades. Then they released them on the Sepolia hard fork along with an intensive network.
The Shadow Fork 9 project was done on the 14th of July, much earlier than expected. It was really because of a little increase in hashrate. It helped the project speed up and reduced the error margin for developers.
No glitches have occurred since the Shadow Fork 9 was launched. It set the groundwork for the coming Goerli testnet Merger. Goerli is going to be the final merge before Ether mainnet changes to a proof-of-stake mechanism.
