The Public Criticizes The New York Times’s Recent Sympathy Article On FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried

The latest article released by the New York Times concerning the former FTX chief executive, Sam Bankman Fried, has been condemned by the online community and some prominent crypto figures. According to them, the article showed too much sympathy for Sam Bankman-Fried.

An article written by Rob Copeland on December 26 cites local Bahamians who generally praised FTX’s founder.

Some locals said they felt awful for Sam, and another said they thought he had a wonderful heart. Even a local interviewed for the report said that it does not make sense that Sam Bankman-Fried should serve a prison sentence for his alleged offenses.

According to the article, Sam Bankman-Fried gave millions of dollars to regional charities, government agencies, and churches. Government agencies and even the police had high praise for him.

That’s why the community had such high regard for him. Locals viewed the founder of FTX’s plans to construct FTX’s headquarters and a hotel there as another positive.

A self-identified crypto-degenerate named Cryptonator claimed that Sam Bankman-Fried gave to the government and local charities as Pablo Escobar did. Pablo Escobar, a well-known drug lord and terrorist from Columbia, invested millions of dollars in charitable donations and infrastructure to win over the local populace to his side.

Only one of the people whose opinions were sought for the article expressed disapproval of the allegations of theft of client funds and fraud totaling billions of dollars by the founder of FTX. The person said this has caused him to view crypto negatively.

A Comparison Gone Wrong

One of the more aggravating portions of the article was where it states that Bankman-Fried’s crime is nothing compared to the gang violence on the island of New Providence.

Layemi Olurin, a native Bahamian, slammed the article in a video posted on Twitter. She stated that the NYT would go to any length to cover up this white-collar criminal, including instantly criminalizing a black nation with gang violence.

Several other crypto community members spoke up to voice their disapproval of the piece. The founder of the Crypto Newsletter, Alex Valaitis, expressed disbelief at the organization’s continued attempts to create positives about the biggest fraud since Madoff.
