Toda City In Japan Starts Using Metaverse Tools To Fight School Absenteeism
According to recent reports, a city known as Toda City in the north of Tokyo in Saitama prefecture is now using metaverse-based tools to work against the absenteeism issues in Japanese schools.
The Metaverse industry is starting to be used to explore therapeutic and educational issues. For example, the city of Toda in Japan is now fighting the problems related to school. The Metaverse tool used by the children to fight absenteeism was built by a nonprofit organization last year.
The tool’s primary purpose was to allow children to roam around in a virtual environment. At least this will be what the city authorities expect from it, as they still want to move a motion that will include virtual classes and physical time in school. But the implementation depends on the approval of the association of principals.
While reaching out to some students, a fifth grader revealed that it is easier to interact, chat and relate with other students online than in the physical world. According to statistics, school absenteeism is becoming a huge issue in Japan’s education sector.
A recent Japan Education Ministry survey revealed that 244,940 students were not available in school for 30 days or more starting in 2021. However, some concerned authorities claim that the massive absenteeism might be linked to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and how it affected children’s relationships with their families and friends.
According to Japanese media, the living conditions caused by COVID-19 rules and regulations are a possible reason for record student suicides in 2020.
Digital World And Education Sector
Several educational firms from different areas have adopted the Metaverse as a tool for learning. For example, the University of Tokyo announced in July that it would begin giving a series of engineering subjects in the Metaverse this year.
Also, the University of Nanjing in China is getting ready to create what will be considered the first Metaverse major in the country. It will guide and enable workers to participate in metaverse-related jobs. Last month, up to 10 universities in the United States of America revealed that they were already building their virtual world schools with cooperation from Meta.
The new development is part of Meta’s $150 million immersive learning project. In addition, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology stated in July 2022 that it is building a Metaverse school to accommodate students who cannot attend physical classes.
