Twitter Hires Hacker As New Head Of Security

In a twist of events, Twitter has hired a famous hacker as its new head of security. This is coming after a major hack attack on the platform that saw several celebrities accounts hacked to carry out fake Bitcoin giveaways. According to the microblogging platform, the hacker was a one-time worker with DARPA and possesses the much-needed requirements to run security operations.

Reports after the hack showed that the hackers carted away nothing less than $120,000 from the platform’s hack attack. A survey carried out soon after the hacking incident showed that Americans already lost trust in centralized social platforms.

Twitter hopes recruit will help tighten security on its platform

Twitter has announced the latest recruitment as it is presently making moves to avoid a repeat of the previous hack event. According to the platform, it has hired the famous hacker Peiter Zatko who is also known as Mudge. The appointment will see Zatko slot straight into Twitter’s executive body and assume the Head of Security position of the platform.

Before this appointment, Mudge has worked at L0pht Heavy Industries, a hacker think tank outfit as one of its core members, and worked with the Cult of the Dead Cow as a member. Zatko gained massive popularity after he appeared before a committee drawn up by the Senate. He testified and gave insights into cybersecurity and briefed president Bill Clinton about DDoS attacks back in 2000.

He further went on to take up a position at the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a project manager. Finally, He moved to Google in 2013 to work for the platforms advanced Technology and Projects group. In a report that Reuters shared, Zatko will conduct a much-needed review on the platform, which will span across 45-60 days with a move to advise the platform on how they can beef up the security of the platform.

Twitter hopes to create a decentralized system

In his first statement since assuming the position, Zatko has told reporters that he will work tirelessly to ensure that the platform’s security is beefed up. In his statement, the hacker says he will focus solely on information security, site integrity, platform integrity, and physical integrity in the next few days. He noted that he would also look to tackle abuse on the manipulation of the platform’s security.

Talking about what twitter wants him to do, Zatkko mentioned that the firm was looking to take risks. Going further, he said that the firm is currently challenging its platform algorithm and its bias simply because they don’t want to stand idle until someone else fixes their problem for them.

Twitter has also said that works are ongoing to create a decentralized model that would catapult the platform’s future to greater heights in the coming years. Notably, Jack Dorsey, the CEO and co-founder of the platform as always been a proponent of Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Jack Dorsey believes that with the help of both Bitcoin and blockchain technology, the firm will be able to rebrand its business in another light.
