The University of Alabama (UA) has filed six trademark applications with the US USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). The educational institution wishes to offer NFT-related and crypto-related services to its users.
On November 14th, a licensed trademark attorney, Mike Kondoudis, announced that UA had submitted crypto-based trademark applications. Also, the university will trademark its logo and name in the Metaverse.
According to Kondoudis, the six trademark filings cover various areas. For example, they include NFT marketplaces, digital tokens and NFTs, financial brokerage services, and an online store for digital goods.
Furthermore, the tweet revealed that the university filed the applications on November 9th. The NFT-based services the university will offer include downloadable multimedia files covering pictures, audio, artworks, and videos in NFTs.
Users would be able to download these multimedia files as NFTs. In addition, it will offer digital collectibles in sports and athlete-related objects.
There would also be an online store where people can buy digital goods and an NFT marketplace for buying and selling NFTs.
Another service the UA will offer is NFT issuance. It will also provide brokerage services centered on digital tokens, NFTs, and crypto-collectibles.
Meanwhile, the crypto industry has experienced increased engagement from top global corporations. This is evident considering the latest spike in crypto-related trademarks filed in the country.
In 2022 alone, there have been several NFT and crypto trademark applications. In addition, several companies have delved into the space.
They range from luxury car manufacturers, tech firms, clothing firms, and financial institutions to government agencies.
The University of Arizona Is Not New To Crypto
On Monday, reports revealed that luxury watchmaker Rolex delved into the crypto space. The luxury watchmaker submitted trademark filings to USPTO on October 31st.
From the filings, Rolex wants to offer crypto-related and NFT services. News of Rolex’s crypto-based trademark applications surfaced not long after other companies, including Visa, Western Union, and Nissan, made similar moves.
Furthermore, several individuals have compared the cryptocurrency market with the internet. They believe companies that enter the crypto sector early have a more significant advantage.
Hence, the growing interest in the crypto sector should not come as a surprise. Several companies want to enter the industry at its beginning stages.
The University of Alabama has also shown interest in crypto. The institution signed a partnership with the blockchain analysis company, Chainalysis in 2020.
The aim is to provide students with the training and education necessary to gain cryptocurrency-related skills. Similarly, the University of Arizona has also started accepting gifts from donors in the form of cryptos.
