Baidu’s AI Ernie Bot Attains 100 Million Users in China

Baidu’s conversational artificial intelligence illustrates rapid grip at home, even when it seems to shut the gap internationally.

An announcement by Haifeng Wang, Baidu’s chief technology officer (CTO), showed that Ernie Bot, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot from Baidu, China’s most prominent internet firm, has attained more than 100 million users since its public unveiling in August.

Baidu Established Presence to Aid Ernie Take Off

The Baidu search engine’s market share in China is more than 76%, while internet users exceeded 705 million in 2023. During the Baidu World event, Robin Li, the firm’s founder, unveiled Ernie 4.0, saying it is better than the previous versions, particularly Ernie 3.5.

An earlier report revealed that according to Lee, the firm’s new model ‘is the most robust and comprises comprehensive improvements to its generation, comprehension, memory, reasoning, and core capabilities.’

Li compared Ernie 4.0 to GPT 4 by OpenAI and claimed that according to the SUPERGLUE benchmark, it is the best Chinese Large Language Model (LLM). Further, this bot is part of the firm’s more comprehensive strategy to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence into its diverse internet services.

Estimates by the World Bank indicate that China’s 2023 population is 1.4 billion persons. Thus, Ernie Bot’s 100 million users indicate considerable market infiltration, reaching possibly 7% of the citizens. Nevertheless, it is critical to consider Ernie Bot’s regional focus. In this case, registration can only be done using a Chinese phone number.

If this is the case, a more localized strategy in comparison to the internationally accessible ChatGPT exists.

Ernie Bot Slow to Match ChatGPT User Base

Following its launch, ChatGPT reached 100 million users, a bit quicker compared to Baidu. This resulted in Ernie Bot’s availability in close testing for some time prior to its August unveiling.

Despite a request for comment, Baidu did not respond.

Baidu’s emphasis on improving and extending its artificial intelligence capabilities with Ernie Bot mirrors the technology sector’s wider push towards more complex and integrated AI solutions.

The firm’s quick development, as well as utilization of Ernie Bot, illustrate the competitive nature of AI and tech space. In this case, user-base growth and innovation are critical success indicators.

As artificial intelligence is an area of extreme competition and development, Baidu’s success with Ernie Bot indicates a noteworthy contribution to the sector. This is particularly taking into account that local Chinese dialects and Mandarin need thorough training since they possess a syntactic composition that makes it challenging to accommodate a model utilized for Western languages.
