Ethereum (ETH) has registered a major milestone in the record book as the Ethereum blockchain has reached 10 million blocks.  Ethereum miners have shown incredible performance by producing ten million blocks in the blockchain in the duration of just five years.

Ethereum mines the 10 millionth block today

Ethereum blockchain has shown major progress over the course of the last five years. According to data from Etherscan blockchain explorer, Ethereum has mined its 10 millionth block today on May 4, 2020, at 01:22:13 PM (UTC). The block count of Ethereum is now 270,000 blocks more than that of Bitcoin. Since its launch in Jan 2009, the leading digital currency Bitcoin has seen 628,900 Bitcoin blocks mined. Bitcoin blocks require more time to be mined as compared to Ethereum blocks which are mined every 20 seconds while the average time for Bitcoin is 10 minutes.

The major cryptocurrency exchange Binance congrats the word’s second cryptocurrency Ethereum on achieving this milestone.

The founder of blockchain infrastructure provider Bison Trails Aaron Henshaw says while commenting on this development of Ethereum blockchain in a tweet that this progress is incredible. Bisan Trail founder says:

“Ethereum just reached 10M blocks! The progress from the genesis block in 2015 is incredible. There are many exciting layer 2 solutions launching this year (like keep_project, NuCypher, SkaleNetwork ) that will help ETH scale even further.”

Ethereum blockchain’s genesis block was mined in the month of July 2015. Luit Hollander states in “History of Etherum Hardfork” that in order to mine such a huge number of blocks in the Ethereum blockchain in just five years, it took over 15 zettahashes of computing power.

Ethereum’s this significant milestone has come on the time when Ethereum 2.0 is in its final stages where the network will shift from the Proof-of-Work (POW) algorithm to Proof-of-Stake (POS) consensus mechanism for better scalability. Ethereum 2.0 updates will help the Ethereum network achieve more progress in the future.
