He indicated that the company behind the question-answering supercomputer built by IBM realized nearly $60 million to fund the Elemental Cognition AI startup.
A revisit of Thursday’s August 17 submission revealed the conclusion of $59.95 million. Seventeen investors raised the amount. The submission illustrated that the company harbors plans to raise $5.75 in additional funding.

The Elemental Cognition’s leadership features executives previously involved in IBM and Bridgewater. The team comprises David Shepler, Mike Barborak, and Eric Brown. Besides the experienced leadership, the company has attracted notable investors, including Geoff Yang, Sam Plamisano, Greg Jensen, and Jim Breyer, who also provide professional advice.
Ferruci had, before joining Elemental Cognition, spent 18 career years at IBM. Besides the American multinational technology corporation, he served as the applied AI director at Bridgewater Associates. Elemental is counting on his experience to steer the project that is bound to face fierce competition.
A review of his career illustrates leading the IBM Watson team for six years ending in 2012. His stint in the specialty team culminated in Watson winning Jeopardy – a television game show. The event showcased Watson’s capability to understand and reliably process the natural language consistently.
