Meta Unveils ‘Invisible Watermarks’ For AI Content: Here’s Why

Meta’s Innovative Approach To Combat AI-Generated Fake News

Social media giant Meta, previously known as Facebook, has announced a pioneering move to tackle the rising issue of AI-generated fake news by introducing ‘invisible watermarks.’ These watermarks will be embedded in images created through their AI tool without being detectable to the human eye.

This step aims to curb the misuse of AI-generated content, a tool increasingly exploited by bad actors to deceive the public. The ‘Imagine with Meta AI’ experience, used for generating images, will soon incorporate this groundbreaking technology.

Meta emphasizes that these invisible watermarks are resilient to common image manipulations like cropping or color changes. Meta’s focus on enhancing transparency and traceability in generated content marks a significant stride in combating the proliferation of fake news.

Meanwhile, the company plans to extend this feature to other AI-driven services within their platform, including Facebook Messenger and Instagram, ensuring authenticity in shared AI-generated content.

Curbing Misleading Content

This innovative step comes as a response to the rampant misuse of generative AI tools, highlighted by incidents such as the circulation of a fabricated image depicting an explosion near the Pentagon, causing temporary fluctuations in the stock market. Similarly, human rights organizations like Amnesty International inadvertently utilized AI-generated photos in their campaigns against police brutality before retracting those images.

Erika Guevara Rosas, the Director for the Americas at Amnesty, explained why they took down the images. He said they want to prevent the focus on using AI-generated images from overshadowing the primary message of advocating for justice for the victims in Colombia.

Meta To Adopt AMD’s New AI Chip

Meanwhile, major tech players, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, have announced plans to embrace AMD’s latest AI chip, the Instinct MI300X. This action points to a growing desire among tech giants for other options to Nvidia’s costly graphics processors, which have long been considered indispensable for artificial intelligence applications.

During an AMD investor event, leaders from Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI revealed their intentions to utilize the Instinct MI300X, claiming it to be a more cost-effective solution in AI development. AMD CEO Lisa Su projected a $400 billion market for AI chips by 2027 and expressed hopes for AMD to secure a substantial portion of this burgeoning market.

AMD’s MI300X

The Instinct MI300X, slated for an early release next year, promises to reduce expenses associated with AI model development potentially. Lisa Su stated that this high-end chip, equipped with 192GB of cutting-edge HBM3 memory, enables faster data transfer and accommodates larger AI models.

Comparing the MI300X to Nvidia’s primary AI GPU, the H100, Su emphasized that the performance enhancements translate directly into an improved user experience. She highlighted the importance of swift responses, especially as AI queries become more complex.

However, the challenge lies in convincing companies entrenched in Nvidia’s ecosystem to consider adopting AMD. Pricing stands as another crucial factor. While AMD hasn’t disclosed the MI300X’s price, Su emphasized the necessity for it to be more cost-effective in purchase and operation than Nvidia’s offerings.

Industry Commitment And Growth Potential

Meta plans to utilize these GPUs for various AI-related operations, including image processing and operating its assistant. Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s CTO, confirmed plans to incorporate MI300X chips into its Azure web offerings.

Despite conservative sales projections for the chip, with an estimated $2 billion in total data center GPU revenue by 2024, AMD remains conservative about the AI GPU market’s growth. While acknowledging Nvidia’s current dominance in the AI chip market, Su expressed confidence in AMD’s ability to secure a significant share.
